Atlanta area hangars?

Thinking of relocating to the ATL area in a year or so. Anyone with ideas on how difficult it might be to find a hangar/shared hangar around there? I imagine Peachtree is out. And probably not too bad to tie down for some months while waiting, as the weather is nothing like Minnesota. Welcome any comments

A lot depends on where you are going to live. ATL traffic is not a trifle. It takes a good 90 minutes to go from the northern suburbs to the southern suburbs at non rush hours times. Rush hour, it could be two hours or it could be four hours, just depends on which flag is out on the NASCAR track. Don't ever say, "Peachtree" as there is Peachtree City Airport ( nee, Atlanta Regional) or Peachtree DeKalb. There are 2 Peachtree Streets, 3 Peachtree Parkways, 5 Peachtree Roads, 12 Peachtree Avenues. Don't ever just say Peachtree. Too much confusion. Oh and don't drive the speed limit, you'll get run over. 10 over, minimum.

If you decide on the south side of town, Griffin, or Newnan for an immediate need until Peachtree City opens up for you. If you decide on the Northside a bit tougher. Gainesville is the big dog because Forsyth County has no airport to speak of. Gainesville has a long list.  Cherokee County if you decide to live in Cobb or Cherokee Counties. They have a list too but it moves a little faster. If you go way north Habersham, Calhoun and Cleveland have lots of space and way south I noticed Roosevelt Field (5A9) had some new hangars going up.

With a year to go, y'all should get on some lists. You'll need a new grill and smoker too.

Agree that first you need to determine what part of town you may live. The list at PDK for hangars is back to being 10+ years. Tie downs are also on a wait list but shorter. You may be able to get something in a group hangar at Epps for the right amount of money and other attached strings.

FTY is running a wait list and frankly has the least amount of available hangars; group or otherwise. Tiedowns are equally tough.

LZU has some tiedowns available and the wait list for hangars isn't crazy.

RYY I think still has some room in one of their group hangars. If not, the list shouldn't be too bad.

The rest of the airports listed above are north of an hour drive outside ATL city limits.

While the weather is far different from Minnesota, it's not a place I'd like to be tied for months on end esspecially in the summer. That summer sun beats down hard and will bake anything inside and out. Birds are a problem in the fall and spring, they can make a nest anywhere and in about an hour it seems. The summers are prone to afternoon T-Storms out of nowhere (typically rather short lived) with high winds. Winters (if you can call it that) is nice though.

Just saying Peachtree is how you get around not actually knowing directions to something or how you give directions to someone you don't particularly like that much.

"just turn left on peachtree" and there are 50/50 odds that the peachtree they turn on is a 1 way

@GeeBee is right on the mark.  Decide where you need to live in Atlanta and pay a lot of attention to the traffic, then think about an airport and hangar space.

In my opinion, particularly on the southside, fly in communities are plentiful and available.  Strangely, as people "age out", they keep living in their aviation community, but their big hangars are either empty, or re-purposed to a rec-vehicle garage.  Finding a convenient hangar may require thinking outside of the box.

Will likely be near Decatur - just east of downtown. Good to know LZU and RYY are possibilities, they don't seem to be toooo far out.

RYY is $750/mo for community hangar and $140/mo for ramp tie down as of last week through Hawthorne.

I moved down here about 4yrs ago.  KLZU is probably going to be your only option.  I sent via PM contact details for Air Harbor.

Being primarily from the Midwest but having lived all over and traveling 200+ days a year have to say SE is my favorite.  Great weather. Within 90 mins of the Gulf or Atlantic.  Hills, trees, etc.  The only thing that sucks is the food which if you come from civilization you will recognize quickly.  Otherwise #1 best place.

People don’t often want to leave their friends, and even if they are too old to fly, they are still aviators. They still hang out with the same people, I guess maybe because we all share at least one interest there are a lot of activities in the neighborhood, we fly out to eat as a group twice a week too

It’s in my neighborhoods covenants that you can’t rent out space to an airplane from outside of the neighborhood, but we have a couple of Widows that do and no one cares. It’s all about keeping a low profile.

If you can swing living in a fly in community I heavily recommend it, from what I hear some hangars go for it’s no more expensive to, it may even be cheaper if you look at all the driving you won’t be doing, instead of hangar rent you have a bigger mortgage, but your building equity. We even have fuel delivered once a month. I have a 285 gl tank and that’s about average.

Good feedback! So sick of the cold up here. Have never lived in the SE but look forward to the change. For food, I think Atlanta will work fine, a broad spectrum similar I hope to what we have in the Twin Cities' which is probably more Vietnamese, Mexican and Thai places than most places. I couldn't believe all the hills in Atlanta when we visited last week -not like here.  Reminded me of San Fran. Thanks for the PM.

As a native of North Dakota with a stint in the twin cities we got mountains down here lol.  Check out Helen, Ga.  My other passion is my 71 MGB and there are great roads down here up, down, left, and right down here!

Mallards Landing has a nice lighted runway.  I’m on GA61.  I wouldn’t leave my flying community even if I couldn’t fly.  So many uses for a hangar!

Yes...thread creep.  Mallards landing runway is technically, turf, but we just installed a plastic overlay called "Runmat"" (very similar to Perfo) which permits use when the runway might otherwise be soggy.

Green grass, but no mud!

I know the waiting list for a T hanger at KVPC is ten years.  KCTJ is about three years.  I think they are building new hangers at KJZP.  Good luck with your search.  If you're lucky enough to find one, you need to secure it now.

I don't have any knowledge about the Atlanta area, but I would secure a hangar (any hangar) as soon as possible.  I had my hangar a year before I had an airplane, but I didn't want to be tied down on the ramp in the sun, acid rain, blowing sand, tornados, snow, and hail while waiting for a hangar.  Probably no hail around Atlanta, but you get my point.  I drew a circle around my house with a 1.5-hour radius, and got on every list inside that circle -- some free; some $100 to get on the list.  For me, the "wasted" money was worth it.  Think of it as insurance.
