Replacing fuel senders 1964 M20c

I purchased rebuilt fuel tank senders can anybody help me with info what access panel do I remove to get to the top of the sender And is it a wet position above the center will I have to reseal the access panel? Pictures would be great

I believe your C model only has two senders. They are located inside the cockpit about halfway between the front and rear seat areas.






You will need to drain the tanks and remove the interior side panels to get access. The senders use a cork gasket. Make sure you don’t over torque them.

CEIS sent me two new gaskets and they are not cork.

Also be careful about over torquing these screws.  don't ask me how I know....damn MSC....

I’m glad you asked… no inspection panels required… 

M20Cs are like what Marauder is showing above… single floats for the 26g tanks…

The cork seals work unbelievably well…. My 65C got the rubber seals anyways…

+1 for using proper torque numbers for the screws…. Even torque keeps them from leaking… 

Shoukd be a quick and easy and rewarding job…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

Remove the crew seats, remove the lower upholstery side walls, the fuel transmitters are on the inboard rib.

A&P secret- don't tell anybody-

 

Use a little Titeseal (medium) on both sides of the gasket.  Just a thin sticky coat all over each side. 

Get it on your fingers and then just a sticky trip around gaskets  Yu should be able to see through the coating when done

Fuel tank cover plate sealant works too. Doesn’t matter which gasket you use, or if you use one at all. Not that hard to remove sensor in the future or clean up.

I could not find those plastic grommets when I changed mine.  I just held the gasket in place while i tightened it up.  The outboard senders did not use them.  Go figure.

It's easy to figure. The sensors are in series. The outboard are grounded. The wire from the outboard sensor is connected to the flange of the inboard sensor. The inboard sensor is isolated from ground. If you ground the inboard sensor by installing it without the insulators, your gauges won't work right.

The washers aren't that hard to find. The part number is in the parts panual.

Good info.  This might explain why my gauge for the tank does not go all the way to full now.
