So today decided to practice the IR with a longer xc, kdwh to kdua.  Have to say everything was going well until the casino took all my money 8(

couple things I learned.

1.  when calling clearance delivery, by phone, never tell them you're in the plane and ready to go.  I think that is code for hey this guy is baking in an airplane lets put him on hold for 15 to 20 mins.

2.  ATC will NEVER EVER, never ever ever, Give you the route filed.  Even when cleared as filed or accepting an ATC preferred route, they will change it, probably before you get to the end of the runway.

3.  you can get actual IFR in texas during the summer.   so far i'm getting lucky between 9ish and 11am  and late afternoon say after 6pm.

Oh yeah, birdy found a friend today.

Getting much better at holding course and altitude over an extended period

If you want to get your clearance "as filed," file it via Leidos Flight Service's website, and sign up for notifications on clearance changes, they will send you an SMS if your route is altered about 30-45 minutes before your departure time.  If it is altered, go back into the website, write down the amended clearance, then go back into your flight plan and refile it with the amended information.  Now, when you call ATC for your clearance, they'll give you your clearance "as filed".  Saves a little time since you don't have to copy the amended clearance over the radio.

It doesn't work as well out of large metro areas like LAX, where special local departure instructions are commonly used, but it works in most other places.

Being based in WV, I used to file Direct all the time and often heard "cleared as filed." Then again, I usually opened in the air because it was hard to reach anyone from the ground. Just like when flying past ATL now, getting cleared once doesn't prevent that "advise when ready to copy" discussion later . . . ,

True, although I have to admit, about half of the times I've gotten the "advise when ready to copy" call, it's been because ATC was trying to give me a shortcut.

I've been cleared as filed, then Approach realized I was coming towards ATL and vectored me away from the Bravo. One time cleared direct from Furthest WV to the VA coast, Potomac approach had me copy a list of VORs to fly, cutting me loose from the airways about 50-60 miles due north of my destination . . . Dunno why, filed "/G" but they insisted on crooked airways across southern VA going to KJGG. Guess my luck doesn't run to shortcuts or Bravo clearances.

I think we get the nicer controllers west of the Mississippi ;)

Yesterday was the perfect day for having an instrument rating. Typical “June Gloom” along the California coast with overcast along the coast and clear inland. Departure and destination were both IFR, but everything inland was clear. Quick day trip to the zoo and back in time for dinner!

1. Waving to Papa as we flew by his house.

2. Petting the kangaroo.

3. Blowing bubbles at altitude - “Dad, do you have a lighter? I’ll bet this would explode.”

I was zipping by at 180 kts getting ready to do the RNAV into MYF when I got turned away for “faster traffic.” I was offended until I learned the faster traffic was a group of jets going into Miramar. Then we started talking about Top Gun and my son said “I hope the second one isn’t full of a bunch of boring talking like the first one was.”

I may have broken the Bravo endurance record today! (Kidding, but see below, flightaware counted my stop in SC as flying time). Besides flying around a lot of weather in FL, a very good day to fly!

The second picture is a SW 737 that they vectored around me and the third is JFK and NYC.

That Beech with rusty prop hubs and split cowls looks like it’s been layed up awhile

Yeah it hasn’t flown in a day or two.

A couple days ago we took my wife's friends granddaughter for her first flight. She is 8 was a little nervous at first but settled in right away. She flew in the front on the way home. There was quite a bit of thermals that day as it was over 100 degrees making for a somewhat bumpy ride but she said she liked the bumps. Saw a couple of Black hawks on the ramp at VCB. Interesting to me as they are painted in the livery of the company I spent my career at. I guess when you go into chapter eleven you can do all kinds of things when it's in the name of fire prevention. Many years ago I flew in jet rangers doing infrared inspections of the transmission lines.

Kel and I flew North Friday for the 39th “Up North” family reunion.  Family has grown a lot in 39 years!  From the seven original children there are now grandchildren and great grandchildren skiing/tubing and catching up.  The video is on the return flight today at 8500’.  Nice and smooth and 145 knots.  55 degrees up there so beat the heat.  1.9 on the tach.  Thank you G.A and Mooney for another wonderful weekend!

Beautiful flight, Scott.  But I was expecting to see some of the crowd of descendants.

Keeping it as all Mooney as I can Hank.  A good time was had and my daughter will be the first Great Granddaughter for my Mother in Law this fall.  I am down 22 pounds, but nobody needs to see that :)   I will stick to Missile and E photos And video on Mooneyspace.

Took my longest flight yet in the Mooney - FXE to BLM 5:01.  Pretty good flight and landed with 35 gallons to spare.  What the Bravo was meant to do (Besides climb over peaks in the west).

Looks like you had plenty of range with the plane.  But you landed 16% battery on the idevice.   That is way below my personal minimums.

Great trip!

Sorry I couldn't make it over Saturday morning for that turbine ride I promised you.  That funeral popped up on me unexpectedly.  Let me know the next time you're in my neck of the woods and we'll get that ride for ya.

Flew to Sault Sainte Marie today to help a friend with some technical stuff, flew his two kids around the area, and then started an oil change. I’ll pull the oil strainer is tomorrow. Wow the oil filter took like 900 ft/lb’s to remove.
