  1. You're right - this should keep you comfortably close to 994PT's arrangement. I wonder if you'll be looking for your ITT and N1 gauges...
  2. This saved my bacon a couple times due to a sketchy gyro AI. I no longer need this. Includes what you see in the photos. Has the upgraded GPS antenna. I do not have the suction-mount as the Mooney-buyer refused to return it to me (along with my headset, etc. long story...) It does include the panel-hole mount though. There is a horizontal white line that is visible at near the top of the screen. That is the only discrepancy with this and that line does not affect the operation of this device. It is no longer under warranty. Photos were taken today (14-AUG-2023). $300 shipped with insurance to anywhere in the CONUS. Check or PayPal accepted.
  3. Check your umbrella policy/contract for specific aviation exclusions. Some do not rule out aviation related events. Consider shopping around. My life insurance broker couldn't find me a life policy without ridiculous exclusions specially because I am a pilot (no coverage on non-121 flights, etc). I went to Pilot Insurance Center and they found me a policy (written by North American) that was actually cheaper than what the other guy quoted AND I can fly the damn plane... The comment about rude Canadians made me spit out some of my beer when I read that (Sleeman's Cream Ale); was quite hilarious to me but I live in the states so maybe my instinctive rudeness has been kept reserved due to the Red White and Blue.
  4. I used to lease an M size tank and refill it myself. So much cheaper and way more convenient. Some MS members use a cascade of multiple tanks. Be sure to read your hangar agreement before investing into your own refill station. Sent from my SM-S911U using Tapatalk
  5. KiaoTime Auto Switch Worked fine the last time it was hooked up to the M20D. Lots of discussion on how this setup works on MS. Can be upgraded to also send back temperature data but I never bought the temp sensor. I was paying $15/quarter for service via H2O Wireless. You can just text it directly or use an app. Shipping will be actual cost and I get commercial rates.
  6. Is there a security camera that watches the runway there? It would be interesting to see the replay.
  7. What did BA pay for FF? I see the press release stated “will enable us to compete and win in the $2.8 trillion, 10-year services market.” so I assume it wasn’t cheap. FF reportedly had 180 staff members as of May 2019.
  8. FYI for anyone that wants to dump FF but access the logbooks. This is easier for dedicated tablets. Prior to account expiration, disconnect from the network prior to opening the FF application so it doesn’t download any updates. Make sure it’s offline prior to using the app and also backdate the clock. This will buy you some time so you can print out/save pdf’s of your logs.
  9. Let us not forget the golden rule of the total cost of an avionics purchase and it’s installation: Cost of Avionic x 2
  10. Sales (AKA “Use”) Tax is dependent on the state. That is typically a matter for any purchase regardless if it’s being imported. A trick I learned later in life was to register as an aircraft dealer and register your purchases under your dealer name. My former state wouldn’t nail you on the Use Tax then. I’m not surprised that some lazy worthless CBP Officer told you to get a broker. If that’s the case then you call back the next day (or shift) and ask to speak to a Supervisor. This agency goes bananas when people complain. I’m serious — I once received a Congressional complaint that I didn’t say “Welcome Back to the USA” to an alleged traveller. I have never said that to anyone. It wasn’t my job to to welcome people “back”. I digress; first get an idea where you want to process the paperwork (i.e. which Port Of Entry).
  11. If this is a private transaction, then it is quite easy. You’re entire experience will be dependent on the specific Port Of Entry (POE) and the CBP Officer who handles the paperwork at the POE. This Mooney should be able to be brought in with a CBP Form 3311 “Declaration for Free Entry of Returned American Products”. You should not have to pay a nickel to import it. Could also do a 7501 “Entry Summary”… Personally I would not deal with a broker as it’s not necessary in this situation. The most important part is to contact the POE you plan on formally importing this at and work with them; ask specific questions and even a point of contact. I always enjoyed helping fellow aircraft owners import their new project birds into the USA.
  12. Maybe we can get Weathertech to come out with some liners.
  13. I had this happen in my C-150 on a blustery cold and bumpy day. I didn’t have an air sickness bag but oddly there was one of those grey ultra-thin-super-fragile Walmart bags laying behind the seats. We were at about 4500 and I did a nose-dive into KERY where some goofballs were doing oddball work at the approach end (no NOTAM). I still put her down ASAP and my buddy tossed the miraculously non-leaking bag into the FBO’s trash can. I’m still puzzled how that bag did not leak. Walmart bags typically tear open at the moment they make contact with anything. After that I always kept at least two (stolen) SkyWest bags very close. Not a Mooney story but it should be a warning to all. I’d keep a portable urinal too.
  14. My $1500 guy (for a vintage) went to $2500 after establishing his operation. I move a few hours West. Due to time constraints and the bird now out of annual I opted to use the on-field A&P. Very very long story short, my expected $2-3k annual is quoted at $30-40k. Several thousands of dollars later I get my plane back from enemy hands, get a ferry permit and it’s completed by the original guy I should have went back to in the first place. Then the FAA knocks on my door as the swindler A&P/firm allegedly reports me to the FAA for misconduct (which was quickly resolved). I’m all-in for using a service like Mike Busch’s consulting firm after going through the hell that one A&P did. As you’ll read on MS, it’s better to have the annual performed in YOUR hangar as you retain CONTROL of your plane. Otherwise it could be held hostage in a million pieces for months while you negotiate with the hostage-takers. Just my opinion…
  15. The date is what it is. It is the date of certificate issuance. Period. If today "Sully" loses his certificate or changes his address and subsequently applies for a replacement then BOOM! He gets a certificate issued in 2021.
  16. I hope I'm not threadcrapping here but its my understanding that there is zero evidence that this gentleman was a newer pilot. There seems to be ample internet anecdotes referencing him; for example: Alexandria Echo Press Golberg said James Edney, 72, was well known among the Alexandria pilot community. “Really a great group of people, very close,” Goldberg said of the Edneys. There had recently been a large family gathering, including Jim Edney’s siblings, at Lake Miltona, where Edney had spent time since he was a child. Golberg said Jim Edney was an experienced pilot and that they had flown together for about 20 years and called the death’ “devastating.”
  17. Mine has been private for years. All I asked them was to make it private. I didn’t give any sort of reason. On the other hand my aircraft registration is not. Nor is FCC address data.
  18. Many have lost way too many of our fellow aviators due to not having one of these in plain view and operating when disorientation happens. I'm still blown away on the folks who seriously believe that they'll have plenty of time to pull out their cellphone/tablet and fumble fart with it until the AI displays, and only then attempt to regain positive control. Anyone who has had a close call with spatial disorientation knows that you really don't have time to burn like that. A backup AI like the pocket panel should be on someones to-do list along with shoulder harnesses, etc.
  19. Right on 1980! I cringe/get angry when I see major media talking-heads falsely associating the certificate date with being the total-years-of-experience. When I had to change the address with the FAA in 2018 I was shocked to see that my “certificate date” was now dated 2018. The first thing I thought of is how I would be judged if something tragic were to happen; “Oh that guy Ed? He JUST got his license this year!” Yet I’ve been flying since the 90’s.
  20. Any estimate to how much it would cost to finance a MOGAS or 100UL STC for all piston birds out there? The Fed grants billions for bizarre projects; $929M grant just restored specifically for the (failing) $100B California high-speed rail project. Again, if we had a smart lobbying group we could get through this much easier. Blue Origin, Jeff Bezo’s space firm might be getting $10B soon to put junk on the moon. “Blue Origin spent $625,000 lobbying the Senate in the first three months of 2021, according to lobbying disclosure records. Among that spending was $50,000 to a team of lobbyists at a firm called Clark Hill that would specifically focus on the moon landing program.” We the aircraft owners need better and more effective lobbying.
