I had the honor of taking my daughter Michele Rodgers on her first flight with me yesterday. It was a beautiful evening over the San Fernando Valley with views clear out to Catalina. It’s so great sharing my love for flying with family and friends. I can’t wait to take her up again. #westcoastmooneyclub

High pressure over the NE yesterday. Baltimore—Boston route frequently involves a fistful of vectors but I went VFR direct at 17,500 right over Philadelphia and NYC.

Leaving Sugarland airport in Texas, on way back home. Crazy weather buildups all around. Houston controllers did an excellent job, together with what were were able to see, we managed to stay clear of real bad stuff all the way home.

Decided today would be a good day to fly to KFFA and hang out on the beach. We were not disappointed, I forgot to get a picture of the nearly full ramp at First Flight Airport prior to leaving. It’s a relatively short hop for us but definitely a great stop!

Now that temps are coming down (for a few days anyway), it's time to get night current again. Didn't think to get a picture of the field until I was done--maybe next time. Calm and clear, just rolled to the end and took off the other way. Two downhill departures toward the lake, landing over town and the development along the 4-lane, and one uphill departure over town, landing uphill over the darkness by the lake.

Winds were reported as calm, but at 1000' msl i had a 10° East correction in; flying south to land on 36 over the lake, it blew me pretty wide before I noticed (couldn't see any landmarks except those pretty lights on the field).

Having forgotten aerial photos of the pretty lights, I did remember recent discussions about leaning on the ground and approximate mixture position. So while taxiing uphill towards the hangar, I took this picture. It's usually a little futher back, but this was uphill at about 1100 RPM.

Quick flight KLMO- KCNY for a little mountain biking in Moab this morning. Photos: Rockies (leaves starting to change), Moab, Dino Flow trail, fellow aviator, Turbulence PIREPS below 16,000 so I changed from flight following to IFR (already had a filed IFR flight plan just in case) at FL 190- smooth, Longs Peak.

This post is titled nothing to see here... for the second weekend I flew to Troutdale to see my new baby nephew and watch my niece play softball. On the flight home both Sunday’s was full of IMC moderate rain and a few icing reports. The joys of flying in the PNW come fall, winter, and spring time!!!! It’s been great having the plane to make fast family trips but I will be spending sometime soul searching for another Mooney with much better ice protection now that I have my IR. On a side note it looked like my nephew was impressed with the beard:)

Last week...a beautiful flight over NC, TN, AL, and MS to get the best fried chicken in the world at the Country Store in Lorman. It is the best. I mean THE best!

 

 

The ribs in Memphis weren't bad either!

Picked up a mercy flight patient in Rochester MN bringing her back to Marquette, MI (KSAW).  I’m not sure what she’s dealing with but she had a great attitude and no hair (I imagine some form of cancer and Chemo).  I saw upper winds rarely seen in the middle of the summer.  I saw 115 knots almost on the nose at FL220 for a while.  Two “Heavy” airliners above, westbound, were crawling along 342 and 328 knots.  Unbelievable!!   

So I ground it out westbound but loved the eastbound leg at FL250.  Saw ground speeds in the 390’s (knots too).  The patient was impressed.

Gorgeous autumn day - Well I didn’t fly today.  But this is mooney relevant for mooneyspace right?

Instead a small man powered boat in - wait for it - Mooney Bay.  Which is on the Rideau in Ottawa.  That’s me in stroke seat  sculling 2x masters.

Interesting, I grew up in Ottawa and spent a lot of time at Mooney's Bay, it never occurred to me that it was Mooney like the airplane. Strange how the brain works.

It was a beautiful day today for the trip home to Toronto from the Mooney Summit. 3.5 hours from ECP to Flemingsburg KY for a quick fuel stop, then another 2.5 hours to home (CZBA).

That is funny!

well for my part I’ve been to that race 3 times now first time a dozen years ago and never noticed it was called mooney bay.  Not to mention I’ve been to the Rideau canal skating dozens of times nearby and never noticed.

Ah, you're the Canadian plane from the ramp! I wondered who it was . . .

Flemingsburg was the first stop on my Student Long XC. Due to requirements and lack of landmarks, I fou d the airport by flying a radial from York VOR.

Flew the kiddos up to visit their grandma, their great grandmother who just had her 94th birthday, and her great aunties (89-94) in NJ for a last minute overnight trip. Coming home got a great view of a thunderstorm off our left wing.  Tops didn’t look above 20-25k or so but looked impressive and foreboding nonetheless .   

There’s some cloud to ground at 1:20.

@bradp, that's an interesting storm! I'll bet it looks much more "beautiful" out the side window than the windshield!!

Got up early this morning, looked outside to see stars/clear sky.  Needed to get night current so drove out to airport, flew to Port Angeles (KCLM) did 2 landings there and returned to Sequim (W28) by 6:15 AM.  Cool nights here prompted me to begin my winter routine: 

1) plug in battery minder

2) plug in Tanis heater

3) place Golden Rod dehumidifier on cockpit floor and plug in

4) put in cowl plugs

5) close cowl flaps

6) throw old sleeping bag over cowl

keeps the engine compartment toasty warm

Just be careful of the zipper when you throw that old sleeping bag over the cowl. Don't want no scratches!
