thomas1142 Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 This 201J has been for sale on eBay quite a few times with no takers. Does anyone have an idea why? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-Mooney-M20J-Single-Engine-Airplane-2400-Total-Time-Fresh-Annual/262704892442?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D38530%26meid%3Df3153d6018f740379228c137e8490f7e%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D262704892442 Quote
Guest Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 A/P is just below the throttle and mixture controls. no engine time posted, is it 2400 as well? Clarence Quote
thomas1142 Posted November 20, 2016 Author Report Posted November 20, 2016 Engine hours are at approx 660 SMOH Quote
Danb Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 Price seems out of reach for 1980, makes one wonder if he actually wants to sell it 2 Quote
thomas1142 Posted November 20, 2016 Author Report Posted November 20, 2016 What would you say the price range should be, taking into consideration the avionics and all? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 $100K The avionics are nice, but it doesn't increase its capabilities, except maybe the stormscope. Quote
DMJones Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 I just bought an 84 K 231 with a 300 hour engine, and same or better avionics for 115K. There are better deals out there. 1 Quote
flight2000 Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 I agree, it's overpriced! Should be somewhere in the $100-115K range. Being sold in California, everything tends to be overpriced IMHO.....saw quite a few Bonanza's with the same pricing theory over there. Only takes one buyer at that price though....the seller just hasn't found the golden fish yet. Brian Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 Either the spouse said sell the plane, or they're trying to get back every penny they put in it. Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 I was shopping in 2015 for an Ovation. Found a nice-looking candidate, priced at (I recall) $220. Flew up to see it, looked at it carefully, read the logs, made a list of what it needed done IMO, I estimated $70K to correct those items. I offered $170 or $50 under his asking price. Seller agreed my list of items needing attention was reasonable but declined my offer, saying that someone less observant would come by and take it as-is. He was right, it sold the next month at near $220. I bought another Ovation later that month that was on the market 4 days: When a good one comes along, write a deposit check right then. Thomas, you've been posting "what about this plane?" topics for ~ six months. Care to tell us what planes you've gone to see and how they failed your reviews? Quote
thomas1142 Posted November 20, 2016 Author Report Posted November 20, 2016 I made an offer on two J's and was refused both times. I had a Mooney expert review the logs and give me the run down on each aircraft. I thought I justified a logical rational for my offer based on the condition of the equipment and the airframe. I guess I was wrong. This will be my first and last airplane so I am been overly cautious as to what I want. A bad experience will be the end of my attempt to own an airplane. Quote
Cruiser Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 Thomas1142, What do you mean by "bad experience"? owning a Mooney can never be a bad experience. you can make a good deal, a fair deal and a bad deal. Buyers and sellers will always value a plane differently. Perhaps you should work with a broker that can also share his purchasing guidance with you. Quote
thomas1142 Posted November 20, 2016 Author Report Posted November 20, 2016 I am sure owning a Mooney is a great experience, that is why I want one. A bad purchase is what will kill the experience. Quote

Not sure if you are using any VRef calculations but it will get you in the ballpark for pricing. This plane has a nice interior, paint looks nice but he is halfway with the avionics. The WX-8 is dated, he has a so so #2 Nav/Com, not sure why the AI is on the right side, I would have removed the CDI and moved it over. With a dual Aspen, he has two HSIs (one on each of his Aspens). The engine gauges were moved to electronic but he didn't rebuild the panel and used an insert to cover the gap. The plane has some nice things going for it, but just not 148,000 nice things. Have you considered a tired J and building it the way you like it? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
thinwing Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 Don't know about the Mooney but the hanger it's in looks awesome! Quote
glafaille Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 Not every owner listing his plane REALLY wants to sell it. Some are being forced to sell against their will by their spouse or medical condition. Some are in love with their stuff and others are simply financially buried in the airplane. Quote

Marauder Posted November 20, 2016 Report Posted November 20, 2016 At that price I doubt it comes with your photo album? Clarence Certainly it would. I would even frame a few of them in gold trimmed landscape frames. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk Quote

INA201 Posted November 21, 2016 Report Posted November 21, 2016 This is not a negative per se but nonetheless typically reduces value a certain amount. http://report.myairplane.com/index.php Quote

If someone came along with 80k we'd probably take it. It's not so easy when I have partners that think it's worth more than it is. Edited November 21, 2016 by peevee Quote
