DaV8or Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 I went to the Chino air show this weekend and was surprised that the new Mooney M10 was actually part of it. I guess Mooney being a tenant there and likely paying some money got them in the show. In between WWII warbird flyby segments, they squeezed in basically an ad for Mooney. Basically a routine anybody here, or any student pilot for that matter could have done. Just back and forth along the flight line while they told a little about the specs, purpose and future of the M10. They also described the new Acclaim Ultra, but it was not there. It was a totally out of place performance and really did seem like an ad where you where looking for the "You can skip this ad in... 3,2,1..." button. But being a Mooney fan, I was kind of excited. The plane has the new diesel engine and I can say, it really seems quiet. Maybe it was the show planes all day, or maybe they had it throttled back, but it was just a muffled Brrrrrrrr.... They would have been much better off displaying the Acclaim Ultra in high speed full throttle passes. Oh well. Anyhow, here are my crappy pictures- 6 Quote
carusoam Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 Nice photos, Dave! those long legs must give it a really squishy soft landing. The P51 tail and the M10 tail are not as close as an M20 tail is to P51. Best regards, -a- Quote
Hank Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 He's wearing a helmet! For plain vanilla, back-and-forth flying? What's up with that? But it's good to see it flying with the correct engine. Progress! Quote
chrisk Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 It's going to take me a while to get used to the way the new M10 looks. I hope it is fast! Quote
Bolter Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 Thanks for posting this. I saw the video and thought it sounded different, but you confirmed it. -dan Quote

Progress! It is still very much an experimental airplane with unknown behavior...a parachute and helmet are wise choices for every flight. 4 Quote

MB65E Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 Fixed gear, The ability to purge your breathing source of anything but pure o2 if needed is huge in an emergency. The test pilot might fly a verity of different each week. It's nice to have familier tools in the cockpit. I have used my helmet in the mooney sometimes. Noise protection, really sweet single action visor, and then the crash protection aspect. At times it's more of a comfort thing than anything else. Smart choice. Glad it's being flown in front of the public. -Matt 2 Quote
steingar Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 Hope they put some wheel pants on the fixed gear version. Pretty impressive, clean sheet to flying prototype in a year. Quote

KSMooniac Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 That gear is actually very stout...and won't be the production version in any case. The production version will have shorter legs and fairings. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
gsengle Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 Yes the renderings showed pants. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
markejackson02 Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 What's with the giant cooling outlets on the side of the cowling? That looks a little worrisome. Quote
carusoam Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 The helmet needs some sponsor decals. Like a big - MS logo on the side. - M20 formation flyers logo. - NJMooney logo. cowl flaps on the side that dump warm air over the wing, instead of under.....hmmmmmm? -a- 1 Quote
aviatoreb Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 You want to be wearing a helmet when you abort and jump out of an unrecoverable spinning experimental airplane Quote
co2bruce Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 It's a diesel, water cooled? Vents in side of cowl for radiator? Quote

MyNameIsNobody Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 Let me see...152...Warrier...or M10 with "spindles" gear? HMMMMmmmmm. That's a tough one. A Mooney owner sees a live version of a clean sheet design and feels uncomfortable at the perceived commercial at his/her field at a gathering of airplanes...a show to show/celebrate planes. Good Grief, just enjoy the show. I find people's reactions to stuff entertaining. THANK YOU for sharing the photos...and insight into what makes you uneasy... Quote

StinkBug Posted May 3, 2016 Report Posted May 3, 2016 It did seem that you were complaining a lot about something that IMHO is as much a demonstration of great things going on at the airport as it is for the Mooney company. The Chino airshow may be primarily about history, but showing the future of GA and the airport definitely has its place. 1 Quote

In Dave's defense (I was teasing) he said he was excited to see the Mooney, as I too would have been. I like any and all commercials IF they have airplanes in them. I really like the look of the M10 and am cheering that Mooney is successful with the trainer on an international basis. Agree that it would have also been fun to see the two door Mooney in flight and on the line. 2 Quote
