Just some tech info:

1) Spoke with STEC. They indicated they are working on a digital autopilot retrofit for the existing APs they supplied to GA. I told to put Mooney on top of the list of STCs. It will use existing servos, but give you altitude pre-select, indicated airspeed climbs (hooray!) and "level" button. Doesn't sound as sophisticated as the recovery feature on other APs but it is better than what we have.

2) I saw the new PS Engineering 8000BTi. This has the surround sound capability. It is a slide in replacement for the 8000BT. Tried to convince Mark a trade-in program would be nice, but no go. He actually advocated to upgrade to the new unit (450?) because of a better user interface. Tried out both, nice.

3) Garmin ASSURED me (I asked several times) that the new GTX-345 will work with the Aspen units. Due out late 2016. They commented that they are actively working with Aspen on it. Aspen reps on the other hand had no knowledge of it. They were promoting the L3 9000.

4) Saw the L3 9000 up close. Definitely a center stack gizmo for best viewability. It will work with the Aspens but you need to purchase the $600 unlock code from Aspen. If you are considering this unit, DO IT NOW! The promo they are running sets the price at $5,400 and includes EVERYTHING needed to do the installation.

5) I'm sorry to say I was not impressed with the Lightspeed Tango wireless. Maybe it was 5,000 cell phones in the area, but lots of voice breakups, clipping and the occasional buzzing from interference. I'm sure it is better in the relatively sterile environment of the cockpit, but it wasn't impressive enough for me to buy.

6) I spoke to the LP folks about replacement glass. If you want thicker glass, they will trim back the edges of the 1/4" glass to fit smaller channels. They recommended sending in your current glass and they will guarantee the fit.

7) For those who saw the NavWorx agreement with Garmin for the 600's functionality on the GTN, be aware that it is not a complete solution at this point. Only traffic will appear on the GTN at this point. They are working on getting weather on the GTNs.

If anyone has something they want me to look up, update the thread. Flying out tomorrow morning.

I went back and spoke with Aspen based on your comment #4. There is an unlock code required to make the L3Lynx to speak with the Aspen.  It is $795, however the unlock is free from Aspen for the Lynx only, but Aspen to Garmin you have to pay for it.

In either case the installer must order it from Aspen.

I'm calling Aspen on Monday to talk with Michael in their support group. He has always given me the straight scoop. The guy I spoke with at the show said that it costs $600 to unlock any ADS-B solution. The $795 number you mentioned is consistent with the amount quoted to me to unlock the WX-500 display on my PFD.

Chris, sorry I missed you at the show. I carried around an Aspen shirt for you to give to Peter hoping to see you. I thought about getting you and your harem flock entourage herd passes to the TBM VIP area, but the structural engineer in me says "best not do that"

The STEC digital autopilot replacement for the 55x is the 5000, wont be out for at least 2 years, geared for part 25 first then for part 23 after that.....too bad g1000 guys.

Follow up questions:

did STEC mention what format (3" hole or standard avionics stack)?

did you talk to Avidyne about adding mooneys to DFC90 ?

Did Aspen mention a new upgraded 1000 (better display) and they had a special expire 4/1, any new specials, rebates?

did Garmin mention the future of the 88 now that they have all in one transponders?

TIA

The new STEC will be in the same form factor as the 55X.

Didn't mention anything to Avidyne. Mentioned it here only when Simpson joined us (we did a poll).

I didn't see anything new at Aspen. Lots of pushing of the AOA. Didn't see any new rebates either. BTW - I thought many of the show vendors were bigger cheapskates than us. The Alpha AOA guys were offering only 7%. Where did they come up with that?

It didn't look like they were killing the 88. I suppose it still plays a role for those who don't want a transponder and UAT only.

Mooney had the M10, the M20R O3, and the new M20V Acclaim Ultra as well as an Ultra mock-up booth so you can climb in.

I was ticked off that the booth was NOT selling ANY apparel. It was 2-3 fellas out by the airplanes, and 2 ladies inside watching the mock-up. No TVs, no promotional videos, no simulators, no hats, cups, shirts, or anything. I was disappointed in Mooney's representation this year, especially after what seems like a resounding financial year compared to the several previous ones.

Also, no representation from Mooney Ambassadors or MAPA or MooneySpace? We need to get some shirts made, ASAP.

Sarasota Avionics had their FANTASTIC M20J out by the hangars with full upholster'ed interior, it had me drooling.

I walked around vintage and GA parking to find a much of Mooney's. Probably saw 30 or so. Sadly, no one was out sitting with them, I was hoping to talk to some Mooney guys. I did note, however, that looking at 20+ M20s, that my gear doors (one open less angular than the other) seems to be a common denominator, so that's one less worry.

And I did purchase a new Concorde RG-35AXC for N6744U. The Gill I have now was 3+ years old, and sat the last year. Last week when I started it, it mulls one prop through, stops, and slowly goes through compression and then kicks over. I cannot wait to try this AXC battery out. And I also found a gentlemen with a dull chrome spinner like mine at a booth, he was selling polish. He put a dab on and rubbed it around and it came out like a mirror. I bought a tube for $5, its called Met-All Aluminum & Stainless Polish.

Sadly, I drove this year, but I WILL be flying 6744U next year, and I hope to meet some of you guys then!

I stopped by Concorde as well and asked about my 12 year old RG-35. They told me that my RG is the longest running one they heard of. I think you will like it.

Mooney Aircraft was a disappointment. When I saw the new Acclaim I was disappointed at the lack of quality for a show piece. The door seal had oozing glue. They had to know Mooney owners would be looking at it.

Jerry Chen was there. Talking with another Chinese fellow that he walked off with. They were standing by the M10 when I saw him.

I picked up the brochure for one of the two metal cleaner displays I saw. I am trying a metal polish by Chemical Guys as soon as the friggin cold weather goes away!

Sorry I missed you!

For Oshkosh and next year for S-n-F, someone ought the design a  Mooneyspace name tag size "cut out" in distinctive enough colors, logo, etc, to be able to recognize from 20 yards away. It could be posted so everyone could type in their name and user name and put it in one of the hundreds of name tag holders we have accumulated. It is no fun walking up close enough to read a name tag to see if you should approach someone, but if you know some distance away, it is a MSer, it would work. If there weren't so many CBs, you could design and sell caps :)

Why not just have a daily meet say at 130 at the mooney tent? Shirts wont work for me personally as I have a few "required to wear volunteer" shirts now and already have 2 name badges I have to wear....hats? Only if they have a propeller on top :)

The MAPA booth has been a hotspot/oasis.  MSers & Lemonade, perfect together...

See if Hartzell is interested in sponsoring our propeller hats...?

A hat with the BMW paint scheme in the orange color of OrangeMTL would be easy to spot/recognize with a TopProp spinning on it.

Get an extra one or two made for the brass at Mooney.  We still like them to be our friends...

Best regards,

Got a chance to see Phil at the Halo booth. Got me two sets of free ear buds!

Sorry we didn't get to meet up. I tried and tried sending a message back to you and posting here for an all Mooney hook up time and place. I thought it was just the slammed cell towers messing me up. I even called Mikes home phone a dozen or so times, he never answered until he was home on Saturday LOL

I ordered a set of the Halos for my wife (to replace her old Lightspeed Mach1's) not sure that the sound was as good as the Clarity Aloft but MUCH more comfortable. Around the ears it's like wearing nothing. I assume you like yours ? I kinda used this post as a reference.

It didn't hurt that Phil has a Mooney as well as a son at Mississipi State (where my daughter and son-in-law went) I told him if he was an Ol Miss fan I was going back to the Clarity booth :-)

Pictures:

New CO detector wood hippy rigged up to try on the way home. Red blanket, that's my feet sticking up...camped in the airplane. Plenty of room. Beach picture is Daytona Beach after departing the Fl. Mooney lunch at New Smyrna Beach.
