I have a 1967 M 20 E , i am wondering how to identified it as one of these ;

 

M20E Super 21

Chaparral

Super Chaparrel 

Mark 21

and of course the 

Mark 21 Super Chaparrel

 

And why is it a 21 when really it is a M20?

With a deal like that, I'm surprised it hasn't been sold yet. :D

 

I am curious how it's faster than most 231's out there. I see that it has a lot of speed mods, but even so I'm not sure it would be faster.

"Turbo-Normalized with the M20Turbos Kit ($45,000 Installed!)". So it's much lighter than a 231 and with the aerodynamic mods I expect it is faster, both down low and in the FLs.

Well as far as price goes, thats crazy!!!

 

But speed. Sunday I was at 3000 feet level, 24 rpm and 21 mp and the ASI was 160 mph. 

 

Its is the fastest thing I have ever piloted.

The M20 means it was Al Mooney's 20th design, and after it was certified Al sold the factory and went to work for Lockheed.

When the factory metalized the airplane to make the M20B, they wanted to differentiate it from the M20A (wood wing Mark 20) so they called it the Mark 21.

The actual M21 was a Lockheed airplane, because that's where Al Mooney was.

I was a bit scared just based on reading the title of this thread. I pictured you waking yourself out of some bizarre dream in which you own your own airplane, then realizing that you actually do and having to come here to relearn the particulars of this strange reality.

 

But maybe I'm projecting here.

I have owned a four cylinder Ford Ranger and a four cylinder Mooney Ranger and the Mooney beats the Ford.

I was allllllllmost a C Ranger owner back in 08'. Instead, the plane ran out of fuel and crashed on short final at my home airport while being flown in for a prebuy by a ferry pilot provided by the seller. I ended up with a J for the same cost. Looking back the C was crazy overpriced.

This is so easy.

 

After Mooney designed the Super 21, and it was not called that at the time, just an M20E, they realized what they had done.

 

The plane was so astonishingly SUPER that they had to add one to it's designator.

 

This math did not sit well with the FAA, so they simply added Super 21 to it's model name.

 

How do you know if you have a Super 21? Well, that too is easy:

  1. When you taxi to the ramp, other pilots will stop and stare.
  2. When your ASI needle touches green on TO and you pull back the plane will literally leap into the air.
  3. When you are doing a BFR and the young whippersnapper CFI asks you to demonstrate slow flight, he will become frightened as the plane will seem like it is hovering.
  4. ATC, when they realize you are in a Super 21, will clear the airspace in front of your flight path.
  5. When you land, the tiny, specific frequency squeak produced by the landing gear will cause birds to respectfully dip their heads in your direction.
  6. You will wonder if any fuel is used during high-speed cruise flight.
  7. Linemen will pull out and don white gloves as you taxi towards them.
  8. Occasionally, when flying alone you will see various ghosts sitting in the right seat--the Wright's, Lindy, Amelia and Beryl, Langewiesche, others, with contented smiles plastered across their faces.

Yes, it is fairly easy to determine if you have the great fortune and privilege to own a Super 21.

Several? We're talking a 1/4 ton Ford Ranger here, not a one ton RAM 3500.

My little 1/2 ton Ranger tows quite a lot. This here trailer is full of wood and tools from my workshop. More is in the bed for stability, so the trailer was not trying so hard to steer from the back.

Total weight? Lots! My guess: several hundred In the bed; close to a full Mooney empty weight for the 6x12 trailer; more than my Mooney's gross in cargo. It pulled the hills in E. KY and E. TN better with the truck and trailer loaded than it did hauling the trailer empty.

But I still MUCH prefer the M-20 Ranger over the capable but slow Ford. Gas mileage is actually comparable, but the Mooney beats it if using road distance instead of aviation direct distance with actual fuel used. But I can't haul gravel back to my driveway with it, so I have the other Ranger. It was also cheaper . . .

i was wondering why people would comment about my Mooney . I think it is great but now i realize it is one of the rarist.
