I wouldn't stockpile these Chris. Rubber being elastomers stiffen and become less flexible and brittle as they age. Along with UV light and heat, oxygen degrades elastomers. So just being exposed to air ages our gear donuts.

When buying these we should always check manufacture date and get the most recent.

It would be my distinct honor and privilege to be admitted to the CB Club!! I know competition is fierce!!

Peter, you are too in love with high dollar name brands like Garmin to be a Cheap B@st@rd . . . Sure, I have a 430W, but also enjoy my PC system and Brittain single axis "auto pilot" and do as much of my maintenance (and annual) as possible. I'm on my second set of safety wire pliers, having worn out Sportys cheap set and gone to a nicer set from Spruce, and I love the double-ratcheting screwdriver set from Lowes for $20.

I'm so misunderstood!

I used very thick jel wraps made for bike handlebars. They worked great and you can wrap it to whatever thickness you like. It cost $19. Do I qualify for membership in CB or do I need a picture too

Honestly- those do it yourself yokes you made are real nice... And dare I say it... Worthy of admittance into the CB club.

...

Possibly a probational membership, at best.

This fellow has exhibited some CB talent on small stuff, but let's not forget he neither discussed his full Garmin installation on MS beforehand, nor publicly posted his costs after the fact. The same pattern of non disclosure occurred with his use of an overpriced paint designer, and the paint shop he used. No discussion beforehand and no cost disclosure afterward.

Being a tightwad on small items while secretly spending like a Bonanza dent on big projects is unworthy of full CB status IMHO.

;)

You raise some interesting, but mostly invalid points. Nothing new there. While you doth protest too much, seeing as how ALL Mooney drivers are presumed CB's, you should be considered, with special attention to full and open disclosure.

Can you be deemed a true CB if, in trying to avoid spending $100, you wind up spending $110 in parts and materials.

Indeed you can if the $110 in parts and materials would have cost you twice as much if you bought it later. :)

I will say Peter did provide help to those who were looking for ideas on how do to their interiors in leather cheaply.

The disclosure part may be difficult...

Open letter to the Cheap B@st@rd Club:

Honorable Members of the CB Club,

I am fully aware of the highest level of prestige and adherence to the core values this here Club represents. Let me also say in advance, to be even allowed the opportunity to address you is an honor for me, regardless of your decision.

Please allow me the opportunity to respectfully alleviate your fears and concerns in view of the allegations the Gentleman from Florida has raised.

He speaks of a "full Garmin installation." Gentlemen, this is a grossly innacurate representation of the facts. On the contrary, it was a very carefully planned and purposeful installation of only the necessary basics. It's purpose was to modernize the panel and bring my Mooney to the technology of the future it deserves.

I stress "basics" and "purposeful". I installed a GPS navigator, of the Garmin GTN variety, to assume the central role in the panel. Along with that I installed only the necessary peripherals such as the remote transponder, GTX33, and the remote audio panel, GMA35. These are also of the Garmin variety.

Rest assured, I did not go overboard Gentlemen! No Aspens or G500 or any extraneous bells and whistles. Note also no second GTN, as I retained the NAV2 role of the perfectly capable KX165.

Only the basics.

The Gentleman from the great State of Florida also alleges that I utilized the services of an "overpriced paint designer." This also cannot be further from the truth! In fact, and in keeping with the Club's core values, I designed the scheme myself Gentlemen! That scheme you see on my Mooney is my own! I simply utilized the bare minimum services of the designer to digitize it and render it dimensionally true to the Mooney. This was a necessary service as the designer provided me and the paint shop exacting mm dimensions of every line, every stripe and every detail on the airplane!

Again only the minimum outside help necessary.

I respectfully request you please consider the above facts as you deliberate your decision. Also feel free to browse the exhibits in my gallery and intimately familiarize yourself with the facts!

Hoping to one day be able to address you as my fellow brethren of the Cheap B@st@rd Club,

I remain respectfully yours,

PTK

P.S.

It seems the Mooney ownership status of the Gentleman from the State of Florida has indeed changed. In fact he does not own a Mooney presently. Also during the time he owned the said airplane he, in fact, exhibited and never disclosed irrational spending sprees! Was he a member of this prestigious Club? Does he have voting rights pertaining to new club members?

Furthermore, it appears the gentleman from Florida has evidently gone mad as evidenced by his reference to the B word!

Our esteemed Cheap Bast$&d from Florida made the ultimate Cheap Bast$&d move -- he sold his plane. :)

If I may interject Chris, as the Members deliberate and prepare to vote.

If most used Garmin GNS 430W are selling for $7,500

and you bought yours for $5,000.......... you are a Cheap Bast$&d

It is not about the amount of money you spend or what you buy with it, it is about the value you get for that money.

Doing it yourself isn't necessarily being a Cheap Bast$&d, but getting someone else to do it for $50/hr when the going rate is $75/hr is.

For all those that value their hard earned dollars and refuse to waste them, consider yourselves Cheap Bast$&d and carry the title standing tall with your head high and a big smile on your face.

Yes you can...

Chances are the quality will be better than original

Or

Your knowledge of the system will be better

In Peter's case...

The aroma of a new leather cockpit while seeing new electronics leaves a lasting memory!

Strive to be a skilled CB to get the proper results...

Best regards,

-a-

If you take the Lords and vacume seal them in food quality bags, and then keep them in dark storage, I dare say they could be 100 yrs old and function fully within spec. I used to wrap my racing slicks in dark trash bags after a race weekend in they only had a medium number of laps on them. I could definately feel the difference from tires I didn't wrap compare to the ones I did. I could do first and second practice on the used wrapped tires no problem compared to ones I didn't take off the rims.
