Typical of the way I generally do things, I bought a full size IPad only a short time before Apple came out with the Mini. The full size one is really too large.

Being a CB, I can't bring myself to essentially toss a barely used IPad and buy an Mini.

Is there any segment of society which would prefer the larger one, where one could find someone to work a swap.

I don't mind losing some to get what I really want, but the spread between what a maxi will sell for on Ebay and what you have to pay for a new Mini is pretty big. And I'm afraid of what I might run into buying a mini from Ebay, Craigs List or the like.

Don -- being a Cheap Bast$&d myself, I struggled with this as well. I started off on an iPad 2 when the EFBs started going strong. I found the iPad 2 was to big for the yoke, so I went out and bought a Nexus 7 since by then I was standardizing on Garmin Pilot.

What I found out was that the Droid version of Pilot lagged in features, so I ended up buying a Mini. Which in turned got me thinking about the iPad 2 being a bit outdated.

End result...

So there I was with a Nexus 7, iPad 2, iPad Mini and an iPad 4. My only saving grace with the wife was that we have kids and they were appreciative of getting my hand me downs.

Quite honestly, I use both of them. The full size iPad is great for flight planning and to do other tasks outside of aviation. The Mini is pretty much dedicated to all of my aviation apps.

The big one fits on one knee...

Captures documents and presents them for easy reading.

POH

STC

Checklists

Manuals for all the instrumentation

My favorite flight instructor was using both the large and the mini last time I saw him...

Things evolve so quickly...

I'm still a kneeboard kind o guy.

Best regards,

Mini on the Yoke and full size in the flight bag for flight planning and back up. I tried the full size on the yoke but I just took up to much real estate and didn't work well. The Mini in my opinion fits perfectly between the horns of the yoke and doesn't block any displays. When flying IFR I always have the JeppFD chart on the full size Ipad ready to go in case of any glitches. It has an internal GPS and displays the approach charts full size.

I used an ipad2 for a year and found it to be too large and ended up buying an ipad Mini with retina display. Last week I checked the iPhone 6+ and found it to be too small for my eyes in the cockpit :)

I think I am done and Mini is it for me.

Similar to Chris I fly with a back up just in reverse my IPad air is on my lap and the mini ready to go if necessary they are electronic so an extra one with you is not a waste of $$$$ I have a present never opened a new mini wi-fi Verizon but only 16 gig. ( that's why it's still unopened). $429 at Verizon. I'll sell for $325....

Nobody is as cheap as me.

That said, I bought a mini during my instrument training because it could be mounted on the yoke in clear view and unobstructed.

I did find out last week why I will continue to carry paper. After upgrading the iPad to the latest operating system level, the iPad froze on me while I was playing around with it at home. Nothing I could do would unfreeze it, not even a hard reset. The solution was to plug it into my PC and let iTunes take over, which sensed the OS level and suggested that I download a fix, which ultimately worked.

Had this occurred while flying I would have been screwed.

You can do what I did.  I had a perfectly nice and working big sized iPad.  When the mini came out - I really wanted one but was having a hard time justifying the purchase.

Then one day I (accidentally - it really was an accident I promise) did something really stupid.  I put the iPad on the roof of my car while talking to someone at work.  Then I forgot about it and drove off. It was in one of those stickey rubbery cases.  So it stayed on top of my roof - for a while anyway. When I was on an open country road finally and hit about 60mph...I heard a clunk.  Huh I thought.  But within a minute it hit me what I heard.  Oh no my ipad!  So I turned around to retrieve it and assess the damage.  I got there just in time to see some "good samaritan" getting back in his truck with my iPad in his hands and off he went.  He kept it....  Gee thanks.

So I cried crocodile tears for about 2 days and after I felt a long enough and respectful mourning period had passed, I got a new ipad Mini.

That method worked for me, and I would recommend it to you too.

Post Script 1: The mini really does fit a Mooney cockpit MUCH better, and specifically it fits really nicely on the yoke.

Post Script 2: (This story is too silly to be made up - yes it is true).

Around the holidays there are deals, trade up programs (steals), and gift cards that come with purchases.

You may want to trade it on or keep it as suggested for passenger entertainment.

I got the IPad 2 in 2011. In was spending $300+ per year on charts. So in two years with the fore flight $75 subscription, I "got" a free ipad2. I want the Mini so I will see what deals are occurring Black Friday.

I got the iPad3, loaded it up with everything, used it constantly, for everything from flight planning, reading the news, catching upon email, reading Kindle books, letting the grandchildren play games on it, and of course, following that magenta line en route. Only snag was its size. Short-legged pilot sits so close to the panel there was no place to put the thing in flight except on the right-side passenger's left knee. Santa Claus must have noticed... So now, I have the Mini mounted on the yoke, where it works admirably, and the full size one tucked in my flight bag for all the other uses. Big iPad or Mini? For me, the answer was both!

Exactly why I purchased a mini.

I saw a refurbed iPad Mini on the wallyworld site for $229.  that's pretty inexpensive when you consider the SA you get with a GDL39 or Stratos and the ability to mount on the yoke is a bonus.  A full sized iPad is a bit too big to go anywhere without problems

October 16 Apple will announce its changes to the iPad lineup...if there are significant changes prices of used may well come down as people trade up.

Christmas wish list?

The mini on yoke blocks my lower instruments, I'm still searching for a location for my mini, I use the copilot yoke for now, might try positioning it to the left side using a glare shield mount

I feel like an idiot. Dropped my iPad2 for the first time in 3 years yesterday. And it broke. Screen is green and wavy. The kiosk at the local mall says they can fix it for about $139, as long as they don't break the glass as they remove it to replace the broken component. If they crack the screen, that too has to be replaced, increasing the cost to $250. At that point, I'll just buy the mini with the GPS chip.

Will probably buy the mini next month anyway during the Black Friday sales.
