TKS Ice Light

Anyone know if you can just change the Bulb when the ice light is burned out?

Or is it the light kit? The Parts manual is vague.

If just a bulb, does anyone have the bulb number

Wouldn't it be great if we were allowed to put a brighter and lower power wattage led bulb?

If you pull out the bulb is the part number on the bulb?

If I ever needed TKS parts I just called CAV aero.  They have everything.

This is probably a dumb question but it wasn't obvious how you get to the bulb to replace it.

You will have to remove the kick panel and remove/replace from inside the airplane.  It's a tight fit but if I can do it, anyone can do it.

Depending on how much you value your time and your back you might want to spend the extra on the LED and not ever have to do it again.

This is what I found on Internet: To replace the ice light bulb on your Mooney, first ensure the electrical systems are off. Locate the screws around the light housing, carefully remove them, and take off the cover or lens. Remove the old bulb (it might be a twist or screw base) and insert the new one, avoiding touching it directly with your hands if it’s halogen. Reattach the cover, making sure the seal is properly aligned to prevent moisture, tighten the screws, and turn the system back on to test it. Don’t forget to log the maintenance in your aircraft records. I hope this helps!

Sounds like an AI answer. There are no screws around the lens. As noted above you have to approach it from the back or socket side on the kick panel inside the the cockpit.

Thanks for the reply, we'll see how it goes.  I didn't spring for the LED at this time since the bulb was $245.  Until the plane is paid for I'm avoiding the "nice to haves" vs "need to haves".

I’m sure different airplanes use different light bulbs, but maybe @CAV Ice has an idea?

Google “H35W28V” and see if that’s the one. Same as the wingtip white nav lights on certain models. The pins are cut to length.

H35W28V does appear to be correct based on appearance.  Upon closer inspection it appears I need to desolder and resolder the new bulb to the wires.  Not impossible, but wondering if there are any better solutions?

I have never used the ice light in anger in 26 years of flying tks’d Mooney’s and diamonds in the Northeast and upper Midwest.

setting aside airworthiness issues, I recommend this as a standby.  Works well on both wings and the tail.

That’s the way to do it.
