  1. @Shadrach, You made a great point about the hp at elevation and power at fuel flow. Something I hadn't considered. I have owned many diesels and love them. Only one I disliked and it was the only 2 stroke diesel I owned. I believe this could be a good option. Though I believe we will still need the hp to get off the ground.
  2. I saw the videos and the costs of the engine was mentioned there. For a J model this engine would be ok, but having an ovation, I'm hoping they would have an option for maybe a 6 cyl with enough HP to equal what I have now. Maybe in the future. I do like this idea for an engine, but I am getting (at 10k-12k') 170 kts true at 11.5 gph. This engine may not get that. Also, I had a 8V92 silver which is a detroit diesel 2 stroke engine. Besides it leaking everywhere, horrible fuel mileage and down on power, it was a great engine. Technology has been around for a long time. I think this is a good option if it works out.
  3. From what I was able to see, it appears that there is a discrepancy between how the two engines are weighed. The diesel weight includes the starter and alternator and other things whereas the gas did not. It is speculated that the weight difference really is only 65 lbs heavier for the diesel. Now, I'm not convinced that this engine will run burning less fuel. I have not seen the comparable on that. The $100k for the 4 cyl is pretty steep unless it has a tbo like 4,000 hrs.
  4. So much good advice here. I also purchased my Screaming Eagle and finished my PPL in it and then immediately started my IFR. No regrets here. It's certainly not for everyone but certainly doable.
  5. When you purchase it and it's yours, why not fly it home? I hired my instructor to fly mine home from Michigan to Idaho. Awesome experience. If you do keep it out in the weather, be sure to look at or replace your fuel o rings to keep the water out of those tanks.
  6. Yep, and I need one. Calling in the morning.
  7. Yeah, the phone number is still in while in the air before landing.
  8. I'm surprised that he wasn't given a phone number to call. Wow, just Wow.
  9. Isn't it great that we can keep these planes flying?! As long as these planes last, we are just care takers of these flying pieces of art in their long life spans. Some owners are better care takers than others.
  10. @wombat is correct on his pointing out the definition of "known icing conditions". Having FIKI on my plane, I use it quite often. I also fly over the Cascades year around multiple times a month and when there is forecast possible icing on Fore Flight, more times than not, I find no icing conditions at all. Known is when you personally see icing. The system works well and has helped me in situations. For my wife, she felt having FIKI on the plane was way more important than a parachute.
  11. Having flown my FIKI Screaming Eagle for the last 5 years based in North Idaho with frequent travels to Utah, over the Cascades to Seattle, Eastern Colorado, and to Eastern Montana, I have no problems whatsoever flying year around and have almost a 100% dispatch rate. At 12K, I can LOP to 11.5 gph at 21 inches and still true at 165kts. FIKI does have a speed penalty. My UL is still high at just shy of 1100 lbs. Having twin w430s and the aspen 2500 suite, it is very capable and I can upgrade as wanted or needed. After spending time debating the issue of going Bravo I keep coming back to, my plane is perfect for me and hard to beat in dispatch, economy, maintenance and speed. Also, talking to turbo owners, they say to a pilot, once going turbo, there is no going back.
  12. Look again at your timing. If it is a tad too advanced, the heads will go hot. I found this out when replacing one of my mags with a new electro mag and the mx got the timing too far advanced. Brought it back 2 degrees and is much better now.
  13. You could replace the bottom plugs with the tops and run it. That'll clean them up. Fine wires are amazing.
  14. I recognize that everyone has a different level of comfort. I purchased my Screaming Eagle with FIKI already installed. It was a must for me. This gave my wife a level of comfort and may I say, more than a parachute would have. I have respect for ice, but have also flown in a ton of it. My comfort level is probably higher than most because of experience, but I really love FIKI.
  15. Search this topic. There are some incredible stories and different ideas. Most that didn't work and some that did. The hose idea seems to be the best idea.
  16. This is exactly my thought. If you have a dragging caliper, it'll certainly pull hard to that side.
  17. There is a lot of good suggestions here. Wise council. I bought my Screaming Eagle mid way through my PPL. Something I have never regretted. It has been fun and with the FIKI and IFR, it's well suited for great dispatch. We fly this NA plane throughout the west with no issues. One latest flight was to a funeral for my aunt last week in Alamosa Colorado. The plane did well with 4 adults, bags and fuel to get to Provo UT. Of course, leaving early in the morning to beat the thunder clouds and to ensure a lower DA was key. Personally, I would love a Bravo. I just can't see the need over my plane. However, if I ever rode/flew one, that may twist my mind to a totally different opinion.
  18. Hi @Bob Vallejo and welcome to Mooneyspace! You will find many great pilots that have differing opinions and with open minds, is where we are able to learn from one another. I am one of those pilots that @Pinecone referred to that learned and got my PPL and then within a month, my IFR all in my Mooney. It is certainly doable but the process, speed and plane must certainly be respected.
  19. On the Ovations there is a jack interface on the left side of the nose of the airplane by the front wheel well. The dimple on the jack stand will work at this jack point as well.

  21. I installed the surefly on my plane this last winter. It was super simple and with the costs of rebuilding the mag vs the surefly, it's a no brainer. No more 500 hour inspections etc. My plane already has dual batteries and dual alternators but I really wanted to install a cb because if that fuse popped that is next to the batter in flight, there is no way to fix it. I learned that the amp draw is so slight compared to the fuse, the only way it would pop was a short. I had removed the vacuum system but left the hose that went from the tail cone to the front which made a perfect conduit for the electrical wire so no chance ever of a short. I'm happy with the surefly and recommend it.
  22. Congratulations Don! The thought of losing you as a pilot so willing to help and share in the field and on this forum is unfathomable
  23. Having a USB port is important for secondary navigation systems like ipad or iphone. My plane came with a stratus USB system that just quit working. Is there a fuse in line for this system or is this an internal problem and it will need to be replaced? I have tried to search on this forum, but I have been unsuccessful
