Just paid 500 for a change on my 991.2 so the prices you are quoting seem ok.

@rpcc

$500 is INSANE!

I've always done my own oil changes on my 996TT; $20 for filter from PelicanParts, and $65 for 10 qts of Mobil full synthetic.  Honestly, one of the easier cars to change the oil.  Filter is easily accessible on the TOP of the engine, drain plugs can be reached without even jacking the car!  Just slide the drain pan under, reach in and undo the plugs.  Of course, I'm a total CB owner...

It’s faster and easier for me to do the oil change in my own hangar than fly to the shop and have them do it. Plus I really like to put eyes on everything under the cowl every 25 hours and make sure everything is ok. I almost always find something like chafing or a missing screw. On my last oil change I found something more serious, a cracked spinner backplate. Fortunately the crack was small and I was able to get it replaced before more damage happened.

Agreed.  That is NUTS.

My M3 takes a "special oil" so $12 - $18 per quart, but only 6 needed.  Oil filter is on top, easy to reach.  So with a MityVac, it takes maybe 15 - 20 minutes to change the oil and filter.

for anyone who's brought their plane in to have an oil change done recently (obviously I haven't in a long time since I do my own, hence the question) what's the going rate these days?  a local shop quoted me $500 lol.  that's right, FIVE HUNDRED smackers.

I have been quoted 550 by the only shop at my field.... I just do it myself and save myself $400.00

Of course, as I normally do as well but now I’m having trouble finding an oil filter and have a trip I’d like to take but need an oil change first. But that’s just too much of a delta to justify.

What filter?

Some people here have a spare or two they are willing to share.

Champion oil filter CH48110-1
Tempest AA48110-2

but I suspect most people are in the same boat.

BREAKING NEWS: mooneyspace member is a local hero

August 30th Concord, NC: A local man pulled a family of 12 orphaned children out of a burning house, saved 18 dogs and cats and cured Covid. Also he was able to surrender 2 unobtainium oil filters so that eman could get an oil change done on schedule. Not all heroes wear capes.

At my field there is a mechanic that works out of his truck and drives over to the plane.  I supply the oil and filter, he does it for $50.  I dont even have to be there. He texts me when it’s done.

Years ago, I flew to the shop to get the oil changed. This was time consuming and expensive. In between, I have a local mechanic but I also learned how to do it on my own. As others said before, it is a good time to check everything under the cowling including using my UV-light to check for leaks. I cut the filter and I even fill out the paperwork for the lab and bring the sample to the mailbox.

At annual time, my local mechanic changes the oil and the filter  and removes and cleans the oil screen. He charges his hourly rate for all the work, including the oil change. I provide oil and filter. I believe it adds no more than an hour to the annual bill because he anyhow has to open and inspect everything. The draining takes place in parallel to  other work.

Umm... yup, my mistake. The $120 was for oxygen servicing.

Currently $240 plus oil and filter, with Blackstone analysis thrown in. I use Philips X/C with Camguard and a Tempest filter so about $350 all in unless I do it myself.

Sorry for the mis-cue, a mind is a terrible thing.

To waste.

Cheers,
Rick

$120 is a great price for oxygen fill. About 1/2 what we pay. But now I get it done at the scuba shop for $25.

I just leave the old filter sitting on the bench for the IA.

Yeah, cats don’t count!

My hangar cat Rod disagrees with you.
