PTK Posted May 31, 2017 Report Posted May 31, 2017 Anyone have the specs of the rollers? Are they available anywhere? Mooney is extremely proud of them at 61$ each! Lasar at 10$ each is still proud of them but less so than Mooney... 1 Quote

On my list though as I work through my interior replacement [finishing up soon, I hope!]. With that said, I will probably order a few that need replacing from LASAR. I love Mooney in Kerrville, but................. Quote
Mooneymite Posted May 31, 2017 Report Posted May 31, 2017 As measured on the edge of the roller. (The worn center was considerably smaller.) That's a 1/4" drill through the center. Quote

N201MKTurbo Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 FWIW, The original wheels were made of Micarta. A phenolic and fabric composite. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micarta Quote

Peter, do the math: 7/8 = 0.875. That would probably be close enough. Finding micarta round stock, though, may be a challenge; I've not used any at work since before the turn of the century . . . . 1 Quote
carusoam Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 That rod that supports the ADF antenna under the belly... phenolic!!! Got a user supplied part and met a great machinist at work one day. Best regards, -a- Quote

Even though I've never heard of micarta before, I found it on the Internet in about .1 sec: http://www.eplastics.com/Plastic/Micarta_Canvas_Phenolic_Rod/XNATROD1-000 So is micarta harder than Acetal Copolymer? MyNameIsNobody Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 What is the number of rollers on each seat? I might replace mine too. I recognize Bakelite as an early plastic. Germans made their panel clocks with brass bezels early in war and economies made them switch to the final panel clock model at the end of the war. Here is my collection. 1 Quote

MyNameIsNobody Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 Yes. The chronos and resets all work like they should. Took a lot of years of upgrading and trading on Ebay to complete my collection. My son will probably sell them for $5 bucks a piece some day Quote
MyNameIsNobody Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 The panel clocks were the one item the pilot had to sign for because of their value/precision and probably because they would disappear. If shot down they were to remove the clock. I am sure that was a priority....or not. Quote
RLCarter Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 @MyNameIsNobody There are 4 rollers per seat.....at least on mine, but it seems mine are the only ones that are metallic, everyone else's seems to be non-metallic 1 Quote
carusoam Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 (edited) For a good feeling of how hard phenolic resin can be... Formica countertops are a surface based on layers of brown kraft paper soaked in phenolic resin. Pretty impact resistant until it chips... Another example of phenolic resin in ordinary life... all the old black plastic handles on cookware were phenolic resin... The trade name used often was Bakelite. It belonged to Union Carbide. What made it so versatile... it was a thermoset resin. Made by filling liquid into a mold, then polymerizing... the finished product couldn't melt... ordinary PP thoughts, not a polymer scientist. The finest clock ever made. I took it apart cleaned and reassembled it. It was hard to find all the specified lubricants. The barrel grease ended up crossing to aero shell 6. That clock was the most complicated mechanical assembly I ever put together. 1 Quote

carusoam Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 I saw a mini drill press from harbor freight that might make for a great hangar experiment... Getting it wrong though, could leave your seat a bit wobbly...? Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Mooneymite Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 If you value your time at more than $0.25/hr. the $10 rollers are a bargain. These have no quality control, no PMA #, and no assurance that they are the correct size. Purely an exercise in "can I make a roller". 2 Quote
Mooneymite Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 As a mechanic, I'm a rank amateur. As a machinist, I suck. I am the master of the 89 degree square. 2 Quote

A true CB knows that one's time is not considered in what a part costs. Knowing "I can make a roller" is worth a lot. 4 Quote
