Seems to me it's up a quarter or so around here. It's never correlated, but auto gas is down a little.

First thing I thought of was pre Oshkosh anticipation of higher demand. Probably just me being paranoid.

Still a little cheaper than last year at this time I feel.

down 5 cents from about 3 weeks ago, but still up about 25 cents from the recent low (can't remember exactly when, maybe 6 months ago)

That's about what I was thinking, it was in the 3.60-3.80 range 5 or so months ago and I think we're looking about 4.25 now.

Last summer I was paying 5+ bucks on a trip to norcal/OR so I'm not complaining

Price of crude has been as low as $28 per barrel this January.  It is up to $45 per barrel currently. Down from $100+ at the peak in 2013...

avgas seems to lag in pricing by a month or two.  Car gas seems to lag by only a few days at most...

Best regards,

We just bought gas at the airport and it was around $3.25+/- per gallon buying 5,000 gallons.  So I am sure those who buy more than 5,000 at a time and more than 2 or 3 times a year get better pricing than we do.

With that in mind why do some places still charge $6+ per gallon?  (Signature, Million Air,etc.)  I understand location and overhead but when the average price is around $4/gallon seems like anything over $5 is just taking advantage of the folks that fly in.  On the other hand that is one thing I look at when planning a  flight and adjust accordingly if I am able to.

I don't know why, but the word seems to be that Aviation fuel guys charge based on what they paid for the last bulk purchase. Hence, the lag. This seems very fair to me. Better than the automotive fuel which seems to be based on whatever they think is the going rate.

They charge it because people pay it.  With the tools available today it is easy to find a lot of alternatives.  I just plan my route and if I have to carve out 30 mins to grab cheap gas I do.

Ditto. Some people will pay for convenience though.

I was once listening to the Diane Rhem show on PBS and her guests were oil company experts. One person called in and asked, "if a gas station gets a delivery on Monday and pays for it and doesn't take on another delivery for another week, why does the price fluctuate throughout the week even though the gas in the tanks were bought and paid for?.

None of the guests would touch the question and she moved on to the next caller.

I believe we were down to about $3.90 a few weeks ago, but when I topped off my tanks this morning the price was $4.05/gal. I don't begrudge the local fuel service here at KSQL. All fueling is done by truck at the aircraft's location, and there are at least four fueling trucks pumping fuel all day. A quick radio call, or phone call via smartphone, and they are there. I like the idea that they do so much fueling, as they always have fresh fuel. I know from conversations with their owner that they test for contaminants and water daily. It's an impressive operation, and we are lucky to have them.

I know this will challenge my membership in the CB club but when I fuel at STS I have the crew fuel it rather than the self service its  about a dollar more a gallon that way but they always have a free car for us to use and provide great service even though we fly a little C and they do a lot of business jet service. Don't mind paying a bit more to help keep those guy's employed. Will check local tomorrow it's been about 4.45 for a while

Signature Flight Support has become the 400 pound gorilla in the FBO world.  They just swallowed Landmark and have been gobbling independent FBO's at an alarming rate.  Signature loves the monopoly it has at many of the big airports and charges little guys as if they were jets.

While user fees get all the attention, Signature is getting to be just as big a threat to the single engine prop guys.  More and more I feel squeezed out of big airports by Signature's high fuel and ramp fees.

While there is plenty of fuel available in at ATL meto area below $4, Signature is selling it at $9 at ATL and close to $8 at FTY and PDK.  (Guess which airport is a Signature monopoly!)

Signature serves great cookies, but I'm not a fan.

That's why I fill up before I go to the Big City, and refill after I return. Gas here is $3.35 full serve at Tuskegee, and $3.56 the last I saw the self serve pumps at KALX. One is 10 nm, the other is 18 nm. If it's too far for a round trip, I stop somewhere enroute, the extra stop won't cost me $4/gallon for 30 or more gallons.

The problem is that at Signature locations, if you don't buy their high-dollar fuel, they add up the ramp fee, the handling fee, the facility fee, the landing fee, the "you have a heart-beat" fee and sock it to you that way.

Bottom line:  Signature provides top-drawer service with all the bells and whistles that prop guys don't need and don't want, but are being forced to pay for.  When I'm flying someone else's jet, Signature is a great facility.  When I'm flying my Mooney, I avoid them like the plague, but with Signature buying out so many of the independents, avoiding them is getting more difficult.

I suspect that the airports that give them monopoly status are enriched by a cut of the high fees.  As airports scramble around for revenue, the Signature monopoly deal becomes an attractive option and we're going to see more and more Signatures, or Signature type deals.

I always thought that American's love "bundling" fees, such as cell phone, TV and landline service or bundling seat reservations and luggage fees to keep airfares low.

Of course I'm teasing, but I wrote about the FBO monopoly here a few years ago. Little did I know how much worse it was going to get and I predict more consolidation. I'm just wondering where the Justice Department is on all of this. If they can cry foul to Aetna/Humana and Anthem/CIGNA mergers, why not Signature/Landmark?

Is there a list that one can search to find out which are owned by signature. Maybe they list them on a Signature web site but might be something they don't want to put out there.

Signature is a BBA company (UK based, I think)...quite proud of the Signature name.  When they take something over, the Signature signs go up immediately.

So I looked up Signature and they have all the locations listed and as it turns out Sonoma Jet Center is part of their company so perhaps it has to do with the local management cause even though they do a lot of jet business they always treat us extremely well. Self service is around 4.50 but as I mentioned above I always get full service the line guys are very attentive and super nice. Their service manager fly's a Mooney.
