Unfortunately it does look like the price has "doubled" according to this AOPA article.

The $2500 figure apparently includes a GPS antenna.

https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2016/july/24/garmin-g5-stc

The $1,199 version didn't include an antenna, tray/install kit, or battery.  How does the G5 derive heading information?

It's just GPS track, no magnetic heading source.

FYI, the dynon D2 already comes with an additional external GPS antenna, internal battery, and several mounting hardware setups.  Gps drives the DG on both units.  Sounds like now that garmin decided to double the price, the logical choice for many folks like me will remain the D2.   It's amazing to me that garmin would do that.

I'd watch the news out of Oshkosh this year.  Might be some really good, low cost options coming our way.

:D I purchased my G5 today. $2400 which includes the antenna, install kit and battery back up. Say what you want about the price difference between certified and experimental versions, there's nothing else on the market that does what this does even at twice the price.

My vacuum pump and electrical back up are history.

I was glad to be a small part of this effort and there's more to come.

You do know that it doesn't talk with an autopilot though...at least that's what I understand.  Otherwise, I'd be all over this little gizmo...

What a minute, I thought the Dynon D10A does all that and with the addition of HS34 gives you full HSI, something the G5 cannot do.

You have to read the STC's. Dynon is only approved in a few airplane models and not approved for Mooneys. Garmin is approved for 562 different aircraft models.  The entire mooney line is included.

I did mention there's more to come. This in and of itself is a significant step in the right direction. Everyone working on this understands where we want it to go. One step at a time.

You hit the nail on the head George. This is the point exactly. Everyone understands where we want to go with this.

We're lucky to have Garmin who is making it happen for us...one step at a time.

Yes, thanks Garmin for following the lead of Dynon. Being 2nd isn't all bad.

Garmin is making it happen?

I thought Garmin was reluctantly responding to an initiative executed by EAA.

We need to keep things in proper perspective.

The EAA has a piece of paper (an STC) to put a Dynon in a few airplanes. That's great. But you can't put it in your Mooney.

Garmin with their product, in collaboration with the AOPA and FAA initiative, was granted the STC to put it in several hundred certified airplanes!

That's AOPA leadership and that's the Garmin difference.

(This is not about Garmin is better than anybody else. This is about responding to our needs.)

To get such a comprehensive list of aircraft approved it took some time. Garmin has supported this from the beginning. Any perception that Garmin is following someone else's lead is incorrect.

The good news here is that numerous avionics companies are pursuing this strategy and Others are taking notice.

The results are lower cost options for us all. A good thing regardless of the order in which the STCs are approved.

I don't understand why Garmin wouldn't just get complete approval for a full function G5 instead of this bastardized version, if you are going through the process it can't be that much more money or work to get the experimental version approved, from a manufacturing perspective it lowers the cost per unit for everyone by simply expanding the customer base.

The STC was granted under the FAAs NORSEE policy. A new program that's in its infancy. Again one step at at time. This is better than our options a week ago and our options will expand as the program matures.
