Kind of bummed but according to BK the certification for the KI 300 is not expected until the third quarter this year.  I know a lot of individuals have lost faith in the time frame predictions but I was really looking forward to an announcement today talking about units shipping.

Murphy's law for time estimation:

Make a reasonable estimate.

Divide numeric portion in half.

Increase units by one.

3 months becomes 1.5 years.

Agree that BK needs to get their stuff together.  I finally start my big upgrade a week from Monday (4/18), and had a KI300 on one of the quote versions, but have changed scope several times.  Am now fortunate enough to work in the G500 and the equipment under the original scope we established almost a year ago.  A year.  I know.  Life got in the way, but we're now moving forward.

Not sure what your long-term plans are, but certainly hope the KI300 is available for you before too many more delays.  Q3 - unbelievable.

Disappointing. Dynon can get their STC done, while a giant corporation like honeywell can't get it done even with a new FAA rule encouraging a direct replacement electric attitude indicator. (mated to BK's own legacy equipment, which seems like  slam dunk) The certification of the KSN 770 was a protracted affair and they had to be bailed out by another company to get it done. What is the deal over at BK? what happened to their supposed re-commitment to GA? One has to question the executive decision to roll this thing out way before it was ready to go...

Apparently there's a problem with the spec'd backup battery not providing the time required to make the KI300 a certified backup instrument. Not absolutely sure, but that's what my avionics guy tells me.

that does not inspire confidence.

So many partners...

Not enough BK.

Peter Aspen, not Peter Garmin, gave a good discussion on requirements for a qualified electronic back-up device.

speaking of that, I have an Aspen shirt for our beloved KI300 evangelist.

I'm really not that worried about a few more months but will be a little unhappy if the delay is them designing a specialized battery that is a chipped unit non rebuildable design just so they can hose us on a $600 battery...

Have no fear, BK is not designing anything... They are outsourcing.

How long did it take for the Ksn770 to come out?

A few years past the original expected publicly known date, plus a year.  When it arrived, the software wasn't ready...

you just can't put a date on it that can be trusted for use.

We have a guy from Avidyne.

We have a guy from Big G.

We have a guy from PS Audio.

Our guy from Aspen is still here, even though he is not with Aspen any longer.

Who is our BK guy?

My allegiance to BK is fading as quickly as my IP is aging...

Best regards,

Want to add another one to your list of BK datapoints? Remember the BK demo we had done at Agape? The BK rep flew in to demonstrate the 770 to us?

I found him at the BK booth. I didn't expect him to remember me personally but he didn't remember doing the demo. He points to another rep in the booth and said he was probably the one. I then reminded him he flew in on a twin Cessna and then he made the connection.

When I managed a sales region that was rule #1, "know your potential customers".

That is unfortunate that it is taking BK this long.  I am wondering how much longer my KI256 will last.  I am a simple person and quite comfortable with flying without all of the glass wizardry.  It can be done, plus I have Ipad and Garmin 430 to watch on.  Also being a cheap bastard I have an issue paying approximately 20K installed for an Aspen, not that it is a bad unit, just that I am a cheap bastard and never getting a return on the money.  Yes I know I will never get a return on my capital investment in airplane purchase but I try to minimize my losses.  What is that statement never buy an A-model of anything, hopefully their won't be any production/learning curve issues but with the extra time it should be perfect.  I have googled this question before and the B-talk seems to have a lot of discussion, but I haven't had the courage to sign up.  Brand loyalty and all.

Well let's look on the bright side...if it is just a "battery" problem, then hopefully they can find one that works and now it's just the case of validating it.  And when it does come out, it's probably the best deal around for KI-256 owners like me...no worries about overhauls of the -256, gets rid of the vacuum system entirely and associated costs of pump replacements, filters, etc., and it is plug'n'play with my King A/P.  All for maybe $6k...

Are used vacuum pumps worth anything?  And what's a used -256 worth?
