LightSpeed Tango - Wireless headset

just a couple of audio snippets using lightspeed tango and flightlink to record.  nothing crazy...... https://youtu.be/0eXBWHqit4A

You almost had me there. I'm looking at your speed across the ground and I'm thinking you are bucking a heck of a headwind. Then I realized what I thought was C panel was a Piper panel -- the rest fell into place from there! The audio wasn't too bad. Still would like to hear your thoughts after a few months of ownership.

Ouch.

But I did have pretty strong headwinds. I think it one point my ground speed was 82kts.

I've been there in Cessnas and Pipers. I remember flying between Syracuse and Buffalo one winter night. I was IFR but in VMC. I could see the cars on the Thruway going faster than we were. The controller came on the frequency and asked if we wanted to change altitudes. I think he was worried he would reach retirement age before we got to Buffalo.

I'm really curious as to how immune they are from interference. Although not in the same class cost wise, I have used my son's wireless gaming headset and found that they would pick up ambient radio interference from other electronic devices. And since I have experienced dealing with this on my GTN, it can get real annoying, if not problematic.

Can you be more specific on what I should look for or listen for? I'll be flying this weekend and hopefully really putting these things to the test.

Hey! Inquiring minds want to know. How are they working out?

I co-own our airplane and when I fly with my partner I usually fly one leg and he flys the other. We always switch headsets and dealing with the wires is a pita.  On exiting the aircraft I have caught my foot in a wire on numerous occasions since we always have two headsets hooked up.  I bought a Tango just for those reasons. Our plane in in for annual so I haven't tried it out yet. I  already complained to Lightspeed about needing to open the door in order to charge the headset.  I hope to try it out next week.

Tim -- how about an update on these Tango units? Fun N Sun is just around the corner!

Really happy I kept them. As I mentioned in my long, babbling, goofy "first thoughts" video there are a couple of things that can be improved upon, however the good far outweighs the "bad". I've flown in several different planes with them and I'm real happy with both the purchase as well as Lightspeeds customer service.

Excellent to hear! I will see if they are offering any specials during Sun N Fun. Are any of the "bad" things you mentioned in your "long, babbling, goofy first thoughts video"  ;) video proving out to be problematic? I think I recalled you mentioning a few things that you thought would break. Did they? Is that why you were using Lightspeed's customer service?

I think my biggest concern was, and still is, the battery door on the headset. But I have just been careful with it and it has not broken. Dealing with customer service was strictly over my inability to make a decision within the 30 day money back" period. Don't quote me on this, but they were willing to be slightly flexible on that for me, which was just amazing. Nothing has broken or disappointed me with the Tangos in any way.

Thanks for the additional details. I will checking them out at Sun N Fun. If they are running a special, I will pick up a couple.

I'm glad to hear you haven't had problems including any suspect interference with anything in or on the plane. That was my bigger concern.

Do you take your headphones out of the plane after every flight?  I leave them in and while the plane is hangared, it gets pretty hot in the summer.  It has started to affect the cords.

I leave them in the plane but I'm not in an area where the sun and heat have damaged them.

I can't leave any portable battery equipment in my plane during the summer.  The hanger gets so hot it will make the batteries start leaking in a short period of time.  I learned that lesson the hard way.

Yeah I think I'm gonna have to start schelpping them home

Pulled the trigger on the Tango's today from Sportys. I figure I'll give them the trial period and see how they feel. I really like my Bose A20s, but the thought of wireless would be nice. I'll let you know what I think. I'm a gadget junkie and like to try new stuff.

I will be curious where you store the module that plugs into the plane. I read that it is pretty large.

Yeah, That's what I've noticed in the Pireps. I had storage pouches on the sides before I put the new kick panels in. Because the new kick panel was slightly bigger I had to take the pouch out and have not had a chance to reposition it. I'll let you know what I come up with.

The Tangos arrived today. Initial impression is along the same lines as the prior reviews. I've been flying w/ Bose A20s. So they are up against tough competition. The quality is just okay, lots of plastic. They sit more on the top of the head compared to the Bose, as a result they feel kind of top heavy. The charging ports are under the plastic door (not sure how well that is going to work). You must open and close it to recharge the headset. IF I keep them and don't plan to sell them off later I'm thinking some handy fine work with a Dremel tool and you could make a very clean small port opening. Kind of sad that for $800 I would have to do that half-arse engineering.

So not to sound like a total downer...For the good stuff..The Bluetooth from my IPhone to the headset was fantastic. The sound was very equal to the A20s. Connecting BT was a breeze. Quality was superb. The Boss, Springsteen sounded incredible..lol

This weekend it is going to be nice so I hope to have real in the air report. I think the convenience of having no wires will be very nice. I already have an idea about where to place the control box, It actually was not as big as I was expecting so that was nice. I'll try and get some pictures of placement etc. So far just from a quality standpoint and what little audio I've tested I'm thinking they were pretty spot on as far as pricing. I think you are getting right at $800 worth of headset. I think I would hedge at more $, but from what I've seen so far they are worth the $800 price tag for the cordless convenience.

More to follow..

Tom -- thanks for the initial PIREP. Curious how they will function in the plane.

Spent a few minutes getting the Tango set-up for a flight later today. This was what I came up with for a location for the "brains". Seems to fits good and out of the way. I used the included slide clip and a small amount of Velcro. We will see how it goes later today. I might run a long USB power cord under the plastic on the sidewalls and into a USB plug into a existing 12V receptacle on my hat shelf. It won't always need power, but it might be easier to leave power going to it and not have to take it in and out.

It clears my knees very good and really don't notice it there.
