Love the GTN 750

Recommended Posts

Reading this lovefest for the GTN 750 was me wondering.  If you're tight for cash, as I am, is it nearly as good to get the GTN 650. That's been my plan since it should be easier to free up the panel space and I'd save about $5K. Any WAAS GPS will be a fantastic improvement for me so I'm sure I'll be happy in the end.

It depends; I got the GTN 650 and doing my IFR now. If I had to redo it again, I would spend the 5K more and get the 750. Just having your plates on the GTN and some of the extra stuff is very nice. If you add ADSB-out/in later on as we have to, then seeing weather and traffic on the bigger screen is much nicer.

I'm glad to have the GTN 650 since I had nothing as ways of GPS in this plane when I bought it, but I should have gone for the 750... The 5K difference is not that much in the long term...

P.S I believe the Jeppesen subscription is more expensive for the 750 since you get more on it, it costs about 800$ for my 650 including maps, safe taxi and obstacle...

Just my opinion !!!

Just for clarification, the Charts feature on the 750 is not free. Garmin charges a couple of grand to "unlock" the feature and then you have to pay Jepp for a separate Chartview subscription.

Is there any way you don't get stuck with an expensive yearly subscription? That really gets my goat. I also remember when TV was free AND we had fewer commercials.

I have the 650 and if I did not have the Aspens (to display the StormScope and traffic/weather (future)) or the iPad for charts, I would look at the 750. I really like having everything directly in front of me.

So, by loading up the flight plan in the 650 (in the future through the iPad and FlightStream), my only need to look at the GTN would be for changes I am making or messages that populate (the Aspens notify you that a message is being sent by the GTN).

If you are going to rely on the 750 to display the charts, I would verify the cost of the updates for the 750's flight charts. I would also check to see to if people are happy with them being displayed on the 750.

But you are absolutely right, a WAAS GPS is much better than none!

I have a GTN750 and a Garmin 696.

GTN750 costs $972. for NavData and Garmin FliteCharts (along with Obstacles, SafeTaxi, Terrain, Airport Directory, Basemap and Frequency dbs.) I would prefer Jepp style charts but costs are a good bit higher with unlock key.

GPS696 costs (for US Lite bundle) $250. includes FliteCharts, US VFR Nav, (along with Obstacles, SafeTaxi, Terrain, Airport Directory)

Garmin has discounts for dual installed units, e.g. if you have a 750 and a 650, but nothing that helps me with the 696 portable.

I have GDL88 so the 750 is a big advantage for NEXRAD and traffic.

Welcome to the finer points of the CB club.

My research indicates...

1) a 650 can supply all the primary nav IFR flying has. WAAS with vertical guidance is a step above everything that came before.

2) the 750 has a few extras that everyone would take if it were free.

3) trying to find a reason the 750 won't work is really hard to do.

4) remote mounting of various boxes and using the big screen is really modern. Audio panel and transponder can go somewhere else.

5) eliminating extra boxes like the ADF and DME is somewhat money saving if you can sell them.

6) If saving money and getting vertical guidance while flying IFR is the priority, how does a used 430W sound?

7) avedyne and BK also have touchscreen GPS navigators...

So pick the box you can afford and start with a version of all the databases.

1) database updates are not required, but verifying or adding way points can be a pain....

2) primo CBs prefer to navigate using an aging database that allows tracking Victor airways.

3) VORs don't usually move.

4) airports don't usually move.

5) when you can afford an update, then get one. When you can afford a full IFR subscription, get that too...

6) expect some unusual behavior from a single database. My KLN90B has recently lost contact with it's database. A single low tech swap of an updated card will cost nearly $300.

7) an iPad does a fabulous job of supporting the (non-primary nav) database issues.

How does that sound?

Best regards,

I would add make sure you like the chart function on the GPS. I have flown with Jepp charts on an Avidyne 9 in a Cirrus and really just didn't like it much. I prefer the iPad. Nothing against anyone who likes it but make sure you are part of that club before you spend the $$$.

You must have a newer release than me. That data field is exactly what I was looking for.

Do you mean the data ID field under the com or nav ?, I got that with my GTN 650 after the latest software/firmeware upgrade (5.13 I think ) from Garmin. The upgrade is free, but can only be done by a Garmin authorized dealer, so your avioncs guys probably, Mine charged about 150$ for it, including paper work and all...

It is well worth it, specially that you don't need to put the trailing 0 when puting a frequency before you can hit enter...

Chris' girls aren't short and wide....

His photographs have been unfairly altered. They have lost their natural L/D ratio...

If you guys finally figure out how to take a picture, I wouldn't need to attempt my amateur photo editing.

How does the touch screen function with turbulence? Any issues trying to modify flight plan ect..?

Not very well, you have to steady your hand by gripping the edges, just like you would if trying to type on a mini iPad, it does have a small, large knob like the 430, which I would use, but you get spoiled by screen interface. For chop grab the edges, for turbulence I would use the knobs.

I've had a 750 for 3 years. I brace my fingers on the right edge of the box and use my thumb to touch the screen. Once is awhile a jolt will result in hitting the wrong character but I would not call it a problem at all. I've never resorted to using the knobs.

I think what a lot of people forget is the right knobs can do a lot of the data entry. If the finger bracing doesn't work, you can resort to twisting for entry.

Sane here, have had the GTN 650 for more than a year and not once used the knob for entry, just for volume and changing from com to nav display...
