FIRST 30 MOONEY HOURS

Recommended Posts

Our M20k has exceeded expectations. After several 300-400 mile trips I wish I had bought a mooney earlier. We owned a Cessna182 for years and although it was a very nice airplane I can't say I miss it. The extra 50 knots on less gas makes me smile. Now it's time to transition my wife from the 182 to the mooney. I was her Flight instructor 25 years ago. Should be interesting.

My wife was born on skis. I was born on the oceanand had never skied till I met her. So naturally she taught me how to ski. It's only fair I'm teaching her to fly the Mooney!

Funny thing is...she is also a better swimmer than I! (One of those inexplicable phenomena of nature!)

Don't feel inferior, Peter. She is nowhere near as good of a Garmin salesman as you :)

We're taking our first long trip in our k and I love the plane too. We'll put 2500+ miles on this week and have fun doing it, the 182 I used to have would be torture! I've flown everywhere from flight levels ifr to vfr at 10.5 this trip with solid performance everywhere.

The wife HATES flying, and she's even mentioned how solid the mooney feels. I think she's almost starting to enjoy it.

For me, I had to force myself to go fly the 182, don't have that problem with the K, I'm always looking for an excuse to go somewhere, to the detriment of my bank account.

Coming west this week we trued at about 190 at FL180, down low I was showing 170k ground at 10,5 VFR and I can't remember the true, about 175-180 I believe.

I run conservative (I think anyway) on my leaning and was running about 1500TIT and 14gph on the flow meter for both. Can't complain about the economy. If I trail flaps I can keep the cht's in the low 300's and not see a noticable speed difference. #3 on my airplane will creep up a little, need to see if it's the probe or just airflow.

Did I mention how much I love this plane? She's currently on the ramp with every cover known to man on her. Pitot, nose cozy, cabin cover, double tie downs :D

I hear you, I have a K and love it as well, although my K is rocket converted, goes faster and drinks much more of gas aka my credit card, We had a flight of less than 5h coming back from Oshkosh to Montreal without going over any water...

My Oshkosh co-pilot that owns an amazing RV6 was equally amazed at the 220 kts GS ( about 190 ktas ) at 12.5 K, and burning 18g/h...

That is my favorite part of flying still, always makes me smile a bit pounding through them :-)

On my last trip from Galveston, I was in and out of the typical afternoon build ups.  Nothing crazy, but certainly some vertical development.  It definitely was not fun, but I was ok with it. Around the time we reached the north west side of the class B, my wife finally had enough.  I got the look and she told me to ask for higher.  Since I was out of the way, ATC was happy to accommodate.

Im lucky in the fact my wife loves flying as much as I do, we are planning a trip out west this sept and plan on going to Yosemite, lake Tahoe, then up to Jackson hole, Yellowstone area, back thru Colorado then home to the dallas area, this trip will be her checkout in the mooney as well. Sometimes it's weird acting as CFI to relatives like my brothers or cousins and I try to avoid doing that, but somehow it has worked fine with my wife over the last 25 yrs. she accepts the student role in the plane as long as she thinks she is boss everywhere else:).
