For a variety of reasons, I have a commercial flight leaving from IAH and I am considering flying private to IAH and staying with Landmark.  I'm just curious about the experiences of others when doing foolish things like this.

in general single engine pistons are not welcome at kiah, and landmark has a similar reputation... i know it is possible, but think flying from AUS-IAH commercial would be easier and cheaper.

What is interesting on United flights are usually several hundred dollars cheaper leaving from austin than IAH.   Going to seattle it was $600 First class from Austin $900 Coach from Houston.   Some of the Austin flights connected to the Houston flight.

I'm going to Bonaire (TNCB), which is non-stop from IAH.  And as stupid as it sounds, the trip is shorter time wise if I drive from my house to Houston and avoid the layovers.  That is, I can leave my house later and get home sooner.  The fact that it was $150 per ticket cheaper only adds.

Anyway, the only reason I was considering taking the plane is because it would be a good opportunity to exercise it.

I always wanted to do something like that...

But... Getting back after a long work trip with unknown travel hassles and then flying home...

I Could never put that together.

I work at IAH and as said you would hate flying in here, too busy. They would keep you on the ground idling too long, something we al know is not good on our engines. Try Hooks airport or Montgomery co. neither are far from IAH better for GA to fly into!!!

I've flown in there lots of times. Plan on landing on the very north runway 8L/26R and having the LONG taxi. I'm not kidding, the 15L & 15R don't exist for you.

Also, understand what the term monitor such and such frequency means. They will hand you off to 3 ground controllers for the taxi but when they say monitor, don't check in with them. Oh, and have the airport diagram out.

Landmark is great though. Always professional service and well taken care of.

Since we are on Austin to Houston.   What is the best method for Austin Berg?  I have flown to pick up friend, but not left the plane to ride with the big daddy plane.

I agree with comments of lancecasper and dimondan..

IAH IS NOT AN UNFRIENDLY AP

It is significant to have a confident communication voice ... and

to have done your homework regarding where on the airport YOU ARE PARKING and dimondan's suggestion of an enlarged AP DIAGRAM is a great idea.

On approach mention your filed notes with your " first contact " with approach..NOT YOUR request for 8/26 ( let ATC pick ur Rwy ) And be prepared for the primary actives.. You are a mooney they know not to stack you close behind some heavy and they don't want some supervisor chewing their butt for doing that

Also the time of day is relative ie 10:30 AM --3:30 PM for arrival is more friendly .. I always go IMC on a VFR day putting notes

"request Rwy 8/26 in notes ..but remember ATC not the pilot picks the runway on the arrival and departure. If on departure you feel more comfortable leaving in 6/28 request it.. It's less of a departure from normal ops on the way out.

Brush up on your com skills... Readback every taxi movement ... Your gonna feel better having done it

Flew cancer chemo cocktails from Houston med center to Memphis Danny Thomas dozens of times
