Just got an email from Appareo about their all transponder:

$3,490 is the announced price.  The unit is not yet certified but they are on track to do so.

-1090ES

-Built in WAAS GPS

-GPS Antenna

I do not yet have ADS-B out nor have a Stratus II unit (though I am planning to do something at some point, as we all are).

I do have a Garmin 430W.

Most likely I'll go the route of a transponder that gets the signal from the 430W vs an independent signal.  Also, I'll want traffic to show on the 430W.  I'll probably also at some point get the Stratus II so that it will interact with the ipad and foreflight (traffic, weather, backup synthetic vision, etc).

I have not yet priced out other transponders.

This transponder would probably have been perfect for my older aircraft that did not have a WAAS GPS as that with a Stratus is a cost efficient solution for both being seen (ADS-B out - required) and seeing (ADS-B in - nice to have using a portable reciever).

What are others doing, will this change your mind?

Prices for the King KT-74?  Prices the Garmin 330?  Again, knew I'd have to but hadn't really started my research.

I probably will not purchase this unit as I have a 430W, but I can see the many aircraft it would work very well in - like a C150 without a WAAS GPS or any other aircraft that has a transponder that can be upgraded and simply get ADS-B out.

I went KT74 to replace my KT76A.  I know some people are leery to have their N# broadcast, but it doesn't bother me.  I have a 430W, so this was the most cost effective way to go.  Plus it got rid of my temperamental transponder.

What shows ADS-B traffic on a GNS 430W screen?

Is it the GDL 88 or do you need the GTX 330?

Can a KT74 show traffic on a GNS 430W screen?   My guess is no.

I have a stratus/foreflight combo.  The 430W may display traffic, but the screen is so small I didn't bother asking.  I occasionally see traffic warnings on the garmin, but I don't check them.

If I remember correctly, with a 330ES you will get TIS-A on the 430. With the GDL-88 you will get TIS-B (ADS-B).

I'm in the camp that I don't want my N# broadcasted but we don't really have a choice after 2020 do we?

The mode C transponder broadcasts a unique serial number that is linked to your N number, and Flight Aware broadcasts your position, name, address and speed to anyone with an Internet connection...

Doesn't it?

It is a big challenge to fly with privacy, ADSB is just the latest challenge....

I thought there was a way to opt out of flightaware, etc from tracking your tail number?

There is. You can run in "anonymous" mode. On the 650/750 you can turn it on/off with a GDL-88.

It does but ATC has to work at figuring out who you are.  Now your N number will pop up right on their display.

Anthony,

Why are you worried about flying with privacy?

I call '76Q The Mistress so that when I am with her it's no surprise to anyone that I am with my mistress.

Wifey doesn't mind, that sort of flying terrifies her.

I have kids and a dog, I gave up privacy years ago...

Somebody above (Tony) mentioned ADSB as the means for the loss of privacy.

Mode S loses the privacy. ADSB loses the privacy with WAAS precision!

Jared,

I updated my post....

I'm not sure why ATC wants to stay with handing out the four digit codes either...

The technology has evolved to sending pictures of the weather, and graphically depicting traffic with WAAS accuracy.

They have enough data that they can call me Mr. Carusoam, use my tail number and have a picture of my ship displayed in front of them...

Anyone with a cellphone can be tracked, helps with knowing where all your family is at any one time, or helps emergency services find you when you've gone missing...

Best regards,

Hmmm... That means they could probably see Marauder's web browser history, too.

Just make sure you use a wide screen monitor when you look through the history. :)

Last Sunday I was flying from Austin to Phoenix. I've got traffic and weather on the iPad with the Stratus II. One of the aircraft showing on the iPad was on my course line but nearly 15K ft above me. The interesting thing was that it wasn't overtaking me very fast. I looked up the N number and saw it was a KingAir. It took almost an hour to go from 10 miles in trail to 10 miles ahead. I guess I had MUCH more favorable winds at 10K ft. than he had at FL25.
