dcrogers11 Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 The Lasar cowl enclosure STC has a couple of options on how it can be installed. That being riveted on the outside or drilling out rivets and sliding it in between the sheet metal. What's been the experience of others with this on a 64C or similar model? Any tricks or learning curve experience would be appreciated. It's not nearly as complicated as the 201 windshield that I installed, but just looking to pick others brains. Thanks, Don Quote
Marauder Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 Mine was installed by Dave Mathiesen (MSC) in Jersey. It was riveted on top. Didn't know there was a different option. Quote
Glenn Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 I had this mod installed at Midwest M20 in Flora, IL (KFOA) a number of years ago. the attached pictures may be of use to you. I did a number of other mods at the same time so I cannot tell you its effect on performance.Putting it between the sheet metal gives it a nice finished appearence. 1 Quote
podair Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 whoa! looks great... I also have a 'sixties orange' 1967 M20F and looking to do the cowl and windshield mod too! Quote

bonal Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 My 64 already had it installed and it is riveted it also has a different top cowl that comes down closer to the spinner. I would talk to Dan or Paul at LASAR I'm sure they will be happy to tell you what is required to install their mod. I don't know what the top cowl mod is but I think it cleans up the big old guppy mouth real nice. 2 Quote
M20F Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 All things being equal, I would go with something like Glenn did. Looks great. 1 Quote
bonal Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 The 201 windshield mod looks great but as far as I know it removes you ability to access your avionics from the top cover and when it's time to get into that area being able to take off that back top cover makes it real nice for access. But I agree it does look nice. It falls under the form vs function debate. Quote
Danb Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 Glenn the finished product paint scheme looks awesome..nice keeping the vintage fleet going.. 1 Quote

I installed mine 2 years ago and it looks great. 20 years ago I installed the same mod on my first M20C and did it the simple way by just putting it on the surface. It looks way better sandwiched in between the cowl skins. It'll probably be an extra 4-5 hours, but maybe you can negotiate with your mechanic.- and if you are doing it yourself, it's a no brainer. Glenn Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 I agree, very nice job how long did it take? I don't recall specifically, but I want to say 2 or 3 weeks. The paint came later. That took 2 weeks at Sturgis, MI. Quote
bonal Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 I must say there are some real nice looking "vintage Mooney's " out there. Keep up the great work guys and gals. 2 Quote
Hank Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 Never paid attention to how mine was done by a previous owner. Looks to be in between. Quote

philipneeper Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Where did you get the lens stc/kit at? Quote
Sabremech Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Hi Bonal, In regards to the 201 windshield mod, it depends on what STC you install as to whether you lose the access panels or not. Mine has the SWTA 201 windshield and I still have two access panels, albeit a little smaller. Having the 201 windshield was probably the most important mod to me when looking to purchase an older mooney. David 1 Quote

Do you have a photo showing the detail of the installation THX Quote

Glenn Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 I'm interested in how it looks as to the access to the avionics. Do you have a photo showing the detail of the installation THX I do not know if this will be of use to you or not. I have attached a few photos of what top access to the back of the panel is with the Lasar windshield. The hole is covered with an easily removable glare shield. Obviously once the windshield was installed it prevented access from outside of the airplane, but service has not been awful. Quote
N601RX Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 I have the SWTA 201 window mod. The access panels are large enough that I can get my hand in and reach over to the center where the mag vibrator is mounted. I can also remove the radio trays but leave the tray backs and wiring in place in about 15 minutes and this gives a large opening to access stuff through. Quote
