Hi all, I need advice again, please. My old OEM landing light broke in two and needs replacement. I would like to confirm whether this would be the correct replacement light (from Spruce):

WHELEN PARMETHEUS SUPER LED REPLACEMENT LIGHTS - 14V PAR 46 - PLED461L

Part # 11-09523

I would like to be 100% sure before I order, because with our poor exchange rate and the ridiculously expensive shipping costs, I can't afford to land the wrong light here. The light needs to fit my '67 M20F.

I think PAR 46 is what you need. The 46 is the diameter of the bulb in 1/8's of an inch ( or is it the circumference?). PAR 36 is pretty small, ~3-1/2" or so. I just put a PAR 46 Whelen Parmetheus on my C, but I'm away from home and the logbook right now or I'd look it up. If no one else confirms it by then, I'll be home again around Saturday.

Is the part number supposed to be found somewhere on my old light? I didn't check when I removed the rear part that had broken off, but I'll have a look when I go out to the hangar again.

I'll confirm the part number with my AME as well, tomorrow.

Your old light bulb should a GE4522 (12 volt 250watt) it's a Par 46

Correct and confirmed by my AME this morning. They also quoted me on a stock replacement light, which they have in stock and somehow, it is almost like nine times cheaper than importing the Whelen LED light from Spruce.

So, I'll stick to the old power guzzler it seems. Thanks to all for you advice and replies.

A lot of folks have converted to (more expensive but much longer lasting and much lower power draw) LED. With the blessing of your A&P or the equivalent there you can buy a bulb from Amazon or similar that is much cheaper that the A. Spruce. You might want to do a search here for a thread on this from a year or 2 ago.

Check you notch locations in the retainer ring.  I believe those insure your filament is up and down.  I just changed out my landing lights for PAR 36 LED and the notches were in different locations.  Not a big deal, just more grinding and cutting. The LED had a TOP marking although I do not think it matters on LED as much.

Your Ovation uses Par46 lights?  I thought the dual wing landing/taxi combos were par 36, or does that change with model?

I have a Whelen Par46 in my F (LoPresti Cowling). The light performs wonderfully; I had some concerns that it might not be as good as the incandescent.

My Parmetheus is adequate. The light is more even than the GE, without the intense slightly yellow center spot. It takes a little getting used to. At least I now feel good about leaving it on all the time.

get the LED when you get a chance.  it's nice to know that it won't pop when I'm counting on it at night.

I agree with all that are say to get the Whelen. Big improvement over the GE bulb I had. Ironically, the GE bulb I had was never replaced in the 23 years I have owned my plane. I have heard horror stories of short bulb life, but never experienced it.

Can I hijack a little? Since we are talking lights, what are people putting in for LED Nav lights? I still have the Whelen strobes and factory Nav but would like to start moving over to LEDs when able...

I have a GE installed and one spare. When they are both gone, I will get the Prometheus. But I have no idea when that will be!

that's unbelievable.  I went through 3 bulbs within the first year of owning my plane.

I still have it... Like its a part of the family. Been with me on some really amazing trips and guided me in on some lonely night flights. Don't have the heart to toss it...

I have 2 working GE bulbs gathering dust in the hanger. I replaced them with Whelen LEDs, one flood for taxi and one spot for the runway. It's really nice to flip them both on for daytime collision avoidance and not see the ammeter hardly budge.

I bought my plane in 2007. Replaced the GE bulb in 08 or 09; just went to LED last month, after leaving AUO at 1900 CDT and landing at HTW 3-1/2 hours later. Durn bulb was fine at preflight, but I noticed on base that it wasn't lighting up the ridge, then on final both the runway and (more importantly) the trees were not lit . . .

For the curious, I've been night current the whole time except for summers, since it gets dark so late. In AL, though, dark comes early, so I'll probably remain night current all the time. But now I won't be worrying about the bulb blowing. :-)

How'd you get two lights? Oil cooler relocation, with light #2 in its place?
