201er Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 I wonder if there is any consensus and standard to how the name of a M20J is said. Reading 201 on the forums may be quite different than what people would say in person. So how do you pronounce 201? Quote
The-sky-captain Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 When talking to ATC I say TWO ZERO ONE. When stating what plane I have in general conversation I say TWO OH ONE. Quote
jetdriven Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 Frquently heard on Houston Center, or how to say something with fifteeen radio transmissions instead of 2. "Houston Center, Mooney 201 echo quebec" uhh, "last calling say again" "Mooney 201 echo quebec" "21 echo quebec, say aircraft type" "Mike twenty papa, slant alpha, and its two oh one echo quebec" "21 echo quebec, squawk 2345 ident" "2345 ident, thats two ZERO one echo quebec" Quote
aviatoreb Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 I wonder if there is any consensus and standard to how the name of a M20J is said. Reading 201 on the forums may be quite different than what people would say in person. So how do you pronounce 201? I never feel the urge to identify what sort of Mooney I am (M20K). I always just say Mooney November one zero niner three three (yeah yeah - tree tree I will say if they ask a second time). I once in a while hear another Mooney in the airspace but why do they need to know which model specifically and it saves time to just say Mooney. I mean if we are talking Cessna, and there are half a dozen Cessna's in the approach to a big airport, a C150, a C210, a C402 and a Citation jet well now I can see the need to distinguish which one. Since there are so few Mooneys, and they are relatively similar in the grand scheme, it seems like just saying Mooney is enough. Quote
Parker_Woodruff Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 If ATC asks what type of Mooney I am, I say.. "252BH is a Mooney M20K, but that'll be Mike Twenty Tango in your system." That line seems to keep them from asking further questions. Quote
mulro767 Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 When talking with other Mooney pilots I just say that I own a J model. When talking with other non-Mooney pilots I say I have a "Mooney two oh one". When talking with ATC I say "Mike twenty papa". However my girlfriend calls it a Mini Cooper with wings. So annoying. Parker_Woodruff Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 When talking with other Mooney pilots I just say that I own a J model. Yup. Always say "J Model" or "K Model". Quote

All of the guys flying 77's with the custom 201 tail number must give atc fits. Quote
201er Posted October 4, 2012 Author Report Posted October 4, 2012 Yup. Always say "J Model" or "K Model". I'd think "201" would be more specific than just J cause there is for example a 205. And in the K world, difference between 231 and 252 is vast. Quote
rob Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 As far as ATC is concerned, there are two M20 types. M20P and M20T. Think Piston/Turbo. The main differences are in the climb rates, I believe. Someone posted the published differences on here in the past. I always tell ATC that my M20C is a "Mike two zero papa" when they ask for my type. I have always just used "M20J" when referring to a 201 in conversation, but when I do say 201 it's "TWO OH ONE" Quote

I explain mine as a Civic with wings... may have to switch to the Mini Quote
bd32322 Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 I always like harping on the LM designation of the 201 when not talking to ATC... M201-LM because its the Lean Machine which sounds very cool !! (to me at least ) - I guess its technically a 205. Quote
fantom Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 As far as ATC is concerned, there are two M20 types. M20P and M20T. Think Piston/Turbo. Exactly.....anything else when communicating in the air is just a waste of everyone's time. On the ground it totally depends on the audience. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 The few times that I've been asked I've responded with Mike two zero Papa. Quote
wishboneash Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 Mine is a 201 (low wing).... 201LW. I drive a MINI Cooper - how did the MINI get associated with the Mooney? It is as aerodynamic as a brick but rather compact... With ATC I identify my plane as M20P/G, with non-Mooney pilots as a Mooney 201, and with Mooney pilots a "J" model. Complicated. Quote

Well that is a lot better than "clown car with wings" :-(( Quote
Seth Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 "Missile" In the Mooney crowd it's the 201 or J, to others, its the Mooney "two oh one" -Seth Quote
