1964 m20e doghouse front baffle seal and felt

Hi, 

almost have the flight controls rigged. getting ready to work on firewall fwd. 

I have a 64 m20e  with the doghouse.

I need the front baffle baffle seal. It must be original. It is stapled in it. From reading it needs to be stiffer than conventional al baffle seals. Any good source?

The felt seals on the front and back of the engine are pretty rough too. Any source for them?

They don’t have to be the original felt, actually the modern silicone baffle material is far superior but will take more time to make it right.  Picture below is an example of how to seal around the starter.

Andy95W above probably has the right solution for longevity.  And it might be easier to install than replacing the original.  So (of course) I didn’t do that.

Aircraft Spruce sells 1/2” thick felt sheet.  I think I ordered a 1’ x 2’ piece.  Although the much of the original baffle seal was installed with staples, the felt can be installed with pop rivets and back-up washers with good success.

I just remake the staples out of .041 safety wire..

I just redid the baffling on the front of my 63C. Whomever did it last did a terrible job and there were gaps in it.

I used the 3in silicon baffle material and attached to the engine cowling with #6 tinnerman nuts and screws. It was easy and only required a utility knife, awl, and a tape measure.

The dog house covers over the top of the cylinders are my next to tackle, they are so cracked and too much silicon has been used over the years to try and seal them to no avail. I currently just have them covered and sealed up with aluminum tape, which works pretty damn well honestly. Heat issues on takeoff aren't near as bad as they used to be on hot days.

I die cut ams3195 .250 to replace felt

closed cell , can be riveted or silicone cement provided.

there are four seals

use 1/2 wide .025 metal strips to secure 

rivet every two inches

I used Gee Bee’s baffle seal. It’s better than the red rubber. Well reinforced.
