If I have two heading bugs, which should I follow?

The heading bug in orange says 070.  But the lady bug with the red top says 125.  Hmmm....

So head up today - I set the heading bug - and then enter from stage right, a lady bug comes walking across the glass - bottom side up.  Then it proceeds to walk all about inside my HSI looking very live and feisty.  Sometimes top down sometimes bottom up on the glass.  When it crossed the needle, it moved the needle.  Bugger!  That thing has to come out, obviously.  How many MMU do you think that lady bug is going to cost me?  It is otherwise a recently overhauled HSI and operating in good shape - even operating just fine with a lady bug going for a ride.  If it wasn't so funny - and happily nothing dire happened as it was furthermore in severe clear, I would be ...bugged.

How the heck does a lady bug get into a sealed HSI??  Big round shell and all.

 The vacuum pump sucks air from the cabin - the inlet side of the gauge is plumbed to a filter - my guess is that the tubing at the gauge or at the filter end is off the fitting.  If that is the case I would address it with the person who installed the rebuilt HSI - also know that you may have been sucking unfiltered air into the HSI reducing it's life.

I am embarrassed to admit - I don't know for sure.  I did my instrument in a different airplane and I had no HSI.  The electric heading indicator is electric.  Is this the same?  

Can some of you other smart folk confirm?

I did speak to autopilot central earlier this morning and come to think of it he was very surprised a bug got in and maybe he would have suggested a vacuum system source if it was a possibility?

This is an added safety device.

In the event of a vacuum failure....

Smash the glass to release the bug.  The bug, while flying, should indicate which way is up.

Did the bug come with proper paperwork?

If you live in a place like me, and that bug goes to S when fall comes and just sits there, then you need to put the other bug there and just follow.  And stay until the bug walks up to N in the spring, if it ever decides to do that.

The lady served you well, deserves a proper burial and death certificate. Make proper logbook entry.

It must be lady bug season.  I let one out the vent window yesterday while taxiing.
