Accuchem is giving a $50 discount on 55 gallon drums. With shipping my price including the discount was $689. Thought I’d pass this info along. Getting chilly out there!

I wish someone - several someones - nearby had tks airplanes would club-buy a big barrel with me.  I end up buying the 1 gallon jugs which ends up being the cheapest solution including mail for small purchases.  This stuff has a shelf life and only needing a dozen gallons a winter leaves me in that more expensive per gallon category.

You do know that in a pinch you can try to mix your own - might make sense especially if you need just a couple of gallons at a time.

Home brew.

I thought about that at one point a few years ago.  The stuff is just a few simple ingredients.  A quick search had suggested to me that it was not cheaper to buy in small quantities the constituent ingredients.  Especially since some of the ingredients are in small fractions of the mix.  But it was only a quick consideration and I could easily be proven wrong.

The formula from EuroGA is:

  •  85% Ethylene Glycol
  •  10% Water
  •   5% Isopropyl Alcohol

So basically Ethylene Glycol is all you need; everything else most likely is in your hangar already.

Best price I saw on Ethylene Glycol shipped was around $150 for 5 gallons. (If we're keeping it small quantities)

6 gallons of Davies on Amazon shipped is $142.50, 4 for $87.

Doesn't make sense at that price to mix it yourself unless you have access to ethylene glycol at better than $22/gal.

Dang that's expensive. This side of the pond ~5 USG (20 liters) of ethylene glycol rated to -80C (-112F) costs $40. They say it meets ASTM D 3306. Used for heat pumps and other green stuff.

I believe that a big part of the cost is filtration: the TKS fluid is filtered down to 1 micron or something.  Are the inputs off the shelf filtered to the same degree?

AccuChem TKS Fluid is produced by Express Chem in St. Louis, Missouri. Our TKS Fluid is filtered down to 1 micron before and after blending to ensure the highest quality product.

Ah - well I am a theory guy - no lab.

Filtering is key...

Think of all those laser etched holes in the leading edges...

How many can get blocked by one errant fly in the ointment...

I usually buy the single gallons just like that - I don't use a heck of a lot of the stuff (but I do love having it just in case based on where I live).

For some reason the single gallons, even say a half dozen of them, ship without hazard fee.  But if I buy a single 5 gallon jug it costs extra for hazard fee shipping.

So for example to my location, by Davies I see shipped, its 110 for a 5/gal + 35 shipping, so 145 for 5 gal, or 29/gal.

To buy from Davies through amazon "free shipping" 6 singe gallons is 142, or 23.67/gal.

And so they are cheaper, and certainly its easier to handle single gallons.

That is my CB comment of the day.

I hate to tell you this but Aircraft Spruce's price for a 55 gallon drum is 685 and includes free shipping.

Put it in the shopping cart and try to check out. Checkout page states item is disqualified from freee shipping. $689 shipped is a good deal. It only took 3 days to receive it. No extra cost for lift gate service. They dropped it off right at my hangar! Win!
