Got a question for you guys with Garmin G500’s or G3x’s.  I have seen a couple of photos of very nice looking panels with G500 NXI and G3X, but also have an EDM930 installed.  My question is, why go with that instead of the engine monitoring that is incorporated within the G500 or G3X?  I am going to be replacing all of my manual gauges soon as some are starting to fall apart, so I am weighing all of my options.  Thanks for the replies in advance.

It’s nice to have the engine data (including individual egt/cht) shown all the time without using a lot of the pfd screen. For this reason we are keeping the JPI 900 vs using the Garmin EIS. However, if the 900 wasn’t already installed the Garmin system would be utilized.

I was going to ask the same question....   You could install a G3x 7 inch screen for the Engine, but at $8K  it would be cheaper to go with the dedicated EMS.  Of course then you would add redundancy..

Who’s panel is in your picture?


Some people prefer...

1) their JPI or EI because they have it, know it, and know how to get data out of it...

2) It seems... you can never have enough screen area to display all the info you like...

3) The Garmin engine monitor is just coming available... too soon to tell if it is better, equal, or not as good...

4) I think the first reports were screen area challenges. What can be displayed at the same time...

5) Some people really take an engineering level approach to their engine data... no engineering degree required... 

6)  a quick glance around the engine monitor shows the pilot all they want to know...

7) Zipping through pages to get to the engine data is never appreciated...

8) We can always ask @donkaye. He is a big fan of the Garmin TXI  and an EI engine monitor, or something like that... my memory isn’t that good... these are also mounted in his Bravo.

9) With this amount ‘invested’ in the panel... you get to decide what is right for you...

10) Some people have gone to the next step... and replaced the BK AP, foth the latest GFC from Garmin...

11) if it is your forever plane... nobody cares that it doesn’t make financial sense...  maybe your kids will....

I am not sure who’s panel it is, it is one that I found on the interweb that was just for visual representation.  I was just asking to find out if there was anything special that one did over the other.  I completely understand knowing an instrument and wanting to keep it once you are comfortable with it.  For me, I am looking to do either one as my new Bravo has the stock gauges, which I hate.  They are falling apart, lights don’t work in half of them and am having weird readings from some of them.  I am planning on doing the G500 NXI as I already have a 750.  I like the idea of always having the engine parameters right in line of sight and not having to flip through pages to get to the info.  So, I guess for me it would be down to the 930 or the smaller G3x that was dedicated to engine gauges.  Anyone have experience with either and would care to share why they like their choice rather than the other, it would be much appreciated.

It is quite possible that the pic you grabbed comes from Don...

Don has been updating his Bravo with Garmin hardware as often as it makes sense... he gets great support directly from a Garmin...

He knows an incredible amount of detail regarding the latest avionics... down to determining the best split screen set-up...

I invited Don to join us here if he can...

His input would be great...

That's a very old picture of my panel two iterations ago.  Since that time, I've added the Garmin GCU 485 and the GFC 500 autopilot.  Behind even the above panel there are additional goodies; the GTS 800 active traffic box, the GDL 69A XM weather and audio box, the WX 500 Stormscope, the FS 210 and FX 510, and the Alpha Systems Eagle AOA with HUD display.  The Garmin EIS wasn't out, yet, when I did my upgrade, but I wouldn't have gotten it anyway, since it takes up screen real estate and even on its dedicated page doesn't have all the information that the EI MVP 50 provides.  It does provide an interface with the iPad for real time viewing of engine operation and uploading to Garmin Pilot.  The new panel picture is shown below with several setups of the TXi display.

Well, I re-did mine all at once so there was no issue with what was there already.  I did ask about Garmin EIS.  To get that in my panel without eating up half of the 10.6" G3X I needed a G3X 7".  Which might have fit (maybe) but because the 7" can't be the back up to the 10" and I'd need the G5 backup regardless, doing it that way for the EIS would have cost about $3500 more than using the EDM 900. Also, the shop I had this conversation with said that even the Garmin EIS dedicated page would not show all the info that the EDM shows all at once--I'd have to be flipping pages to get the rest of the info.  I'm not absolutely certain that's accurate--but that was the best explanation I could find at the time (last Fall).  I'd flown about 12 hours in an SR22 Avidyne panel at that point and was always frustrated with having to turn a MFD knob to see the whole engine picture, then back to what else I wanted to look at, and back and forth....so I was not anxious to re-create that situation.

So for me it came down to replacing the old ship's guages which are always visible with something new that still made all that data always visible.  I think either will work fine and you'll get used to whatever you do very quickly.  I like my EDM 900.

It's approved as a backup to the G500TXi.

Dynon does not have the restrictions or cost.   So put engine information on the 7" possibly on a 50/50 split.  So then what's to go on the 10" Synthetic Vision and traffic on a 50/50 split.

Three choices  50/50 split, full screen. or Engine in a bottom band.
