Any tricks to pulling oil screen on IO-360?

Run a magnet over the screen and reference Lycoming SI # 1492C

The gasket in an MS35769-21, replace each time, split in the copper goes against the engine.

It's the 'crush' in 'crush gasket'. It seals the part against any irregularities between the sealing surfaces. Copper is soft, and the original hight-heat resistant material.

Remember, 'one drop of oil can coat a plane'.

A few years back, I saw hardly any metal in the oil filter, but this is what I found in the screen... I was suffering from low oil pressure... So the answer is yes, it is possible. :)

Don't know if this has been mentioned before but the hand safety screwdriver style twister would be perfectly suited for this task...

If I remember correctly, I think 2 tappets had been been cracked. My engine case was jacked up too. No matter how bloody my knuckles, I will be changing the screen at EVERY oil change. Lol. Here's a couple more photos...

I GREATLY appreciate the close-up of the plug with the crush washer and the drilled head--I knew it looked like that, but didn't have a clear picture in my head until I saw your post.

The Lyc manual implies that you only pull that screen if there is no spin-on filter. Your discovery suggests an annual inspection of it.

Don,  Dmevans mentioned two tappets... those are the things whose surfaces ride on the cam, that ultimately activate the valves via the push rods(?)

They have a tendency to get corroded surfaces similar to the cam surface...  the rough tappets running around on the rough cam lobe surface start cutting into each other...

I have seen the rough surfaced tappets in pics around here... but hadn’t seen one broken like this that I remember...

It shows how tough these engines can be, all of that damage and it was still running.  I’m glad you caught it before it quit.
