I've searched past threat topics and google and haven't found anything that leads to any information on an increase of a gross weight from 2900 to 3200 pounds for the PFM IO550 engine increase. Does anyone know of one?

Thanks

If there were such a thing why have I never seen a former PFM for sale with anything but awful useful loads...

Rumor has it...

The PFM has legs that are not as strong as the Bravo, Ovation, Eagle, that came after the first Long Body.

See what it would take to update the parts.

What is the rule for taking parts from one Mooney M20 and putting them on another? (Not really easy)

Best regards,

I kind of surmised all of the above unfortunate scenario's. has anyone figured out if Mooney had maybe taken a M20J gear setup and installed them into the PFM? What's the difference between early models and Ovation gear?

The M20L had the same gear as the J/K, if I remember correctly, which needed to be more robust for the longer, heavier L.  Part of the Gross Weight Increase on later models (M/R/TN) was also better brakes.

This type of thread comes up at least once a year when a reasonably priced L converted to a IO-550 comes on the market. Once the person really thinks about the lack of useful load and nonexistent resale value they move usually move on.

Buy it cheap and put it into the experimental class. Change parts as you wish and become your own test pilot. Seriously though that might be a way to upgrade the landing gear and update the avionics at reasonable cost. Worth whatever experimentals are worth on the resale market.

That basically cannot be done anymore.

I like this one, two GMX-200s.

I think I'll make on offer, $65K, basically what I can get out of it by breaking it down and selling the parts and pieces on eBay. The seller is currently dreaming.

Of course it can be ;-) Get your $500 paper annuals (you know, the ones that fit on an address label) and fly it until it falls apart. Plenty of older IAs out there willing to do this. Just don't ever take it to a certified repair station.

That's a beautiful plane. Unfortunately, the weight limitations render it pretty much useless. I could get around 20 gals of fuel onboard with me, wife and 7&9 year old daughters. It's fast, but how far can you go in half an hour?

Honestly the market must be for people who only fly around solo and like the deep discount. I don't know how the seller thinks they can get Ovation prices for it.

It amazes me that someone smarter than me hasn't figured this out yet. The easiest solution for all of these airplanes is a simple paperwork exercise. Make 2900 lbs the Max Landing Weight and set a higher Max Taxi and Takeoff Weight to what ever the engineers determine is safe for this airframe / engine combination. Just like we do for the big airplanes.

That's a great idea, but who's going to pay for the engineering data to present to the FAA for them to kick back 3 times before they may or may not approve the change to the airplane's paperwork?

He'll be lucky to get anything North of $100K but I'm sure he's hoping to find a buyer "asleep at the wheel". A hundred people can call him crazy but he only needs one that thinks it's a deal.
