PIREP - New Whelen Parmetheus Plus Super PAR 46 landing light

I actually bought the newer Whelen PAR 46 LED light ar Airventure this year replacing the original Parmetheus I bought in 2012 and I can honestly say there is a noticeable difference in brightness. Whether or not it's worth paying the extra money is up to the individual pilot but being a self professed CB club member, I say it's worth it. I finally installed it last week and I really like it.

Hopefully my whelen PAR 46 will arrive today. Will provide a PIREP after I test it out. Take care

I put in an original Parmetheus in April '14. The switch has been turned off twice--annual in Jan '15 and transponder certification in Sept '15.

I see the specs are for either a 14v or a 28v light. As far as I know, my C is a 12v system. Can I use the 14v light on mine?

Yes, the 12v and 14v designations are actually the same.  Typically they charge at a rate up close to 14v, and with no charging may drop down the close to 12v.

I have two LED bulbs.  They are both AeroLEDs. One is the LX model and one the HX model.

They are bright and one of them pulses, my taxi light can pulse as well.

If your ship has one landing/taxi light, get the version that can be, on, off, or pulse.  It's just a third wire run to the built in functionality of the unit.

Daytime SOP: Landing Light On, Taxi Light Pulse

Nightime SOP: Both ON, when near well lit ramp or people, Landing Light off, Taxi Light on.

I need to order one for my C. Is there is a difference between the 36 or the 46 in terms of drop in replacement? Should I just order the 46 since the number is larger and therefore better?

That's what I'm asking because I don't know which one works for my C. The last bit of my last post was sarcasm but I see the internets failed me.

I think all single light installations are 46, the dual wing mounted are 36. To be sure, measure your current light diameter.

it is par 46 for the C model.  The 36 and 46 are sizes; 4 1/2" vs 5 3/4" or something similar.

Your C will take the PAR46. Going by memory, the number is the diameter of the bulb in 1/8s of an inch. 36/8 = 4-1/2", the small bulb in the J cowl, I think, and in wing installations; 48/8 = 6", which is in my cowl.

This weekend I begin my Parmetheus investigation: why did my light not work the other night? It was installed in April 2014, approx. 90-100 flight hours ago. Changing jobs and moving twice really ate into my flight time . . .  :(

Hank,

Maybe  it overheated way down South?  It may like the cooler North.

are we still meeting up with gus this weekend?  If so, we could swap lights and see if it's a bulb issue.

Oh! Almost forgot . . .

are we doing to Columbus? There are eating places nearby, but I'm barely familiar.

not sure.  we'll have to wait on Gus to get back in town to confirm, but columbus sounds good to me.

Hank, I sense a shark in the waters... PAR...

big bulb goes in the cowling.

small bulb traditionally goes in the wing.

It is an expensive mod to put lights in the wing if the holes aren't there already.

Best regards,
