Using ForeFight with Stratus 2s and Garmin Pilot with FlightStream/GTN on the same iPad

Well I will be very interested to hear if it works.  Or better yet - come show me!!!

As for pre-cabling?  Why not finish the job and just install the ADSB out transponder.  I really like mine - seeing lots of traffic is very useful when travelling into busy airspaces.

Well I would love to do that, but my partner is selling his half and not willing to spend big money on new avionics, I'm paying the FlightStrem by myself, so I will wait until he find a buyer for his half or if in a 1 year, if he has not found 1, I will buy his half and then can make any changes I want to it.

I just wrote Foreflight support and asked the big question(s) us Stratus 2 owners want to know:

"Can we simultaneously recieve ADS-B input from the Stratus 2 while also sharing flight plans with our Garmin panel GPS via FlightStream 210?

Can we then select either source input (Stratus 2 or FlightStream 210) for GPS or AHRS feeding ForeFlight ... or is it predetermined?"

I'll post their reply.

Well the response I got from them on the same question is that ADS-B Traffic and weather will come trough the Stratus, but GPS position will come trough the Garmin Panel... Not sure about AHRS, I don't know if my garmin 650 has AHRS system, don't think so...

In case I missed it:

Did anyone heard a DEFINITE answer the question if the FlightStream 210  and a Stratus 2 will be able to SIMULTANEOUSLY  connect to ForeFlight?

???????

For those of us who already own a Stratus 2, do not have a GDL-88 ... and still want to use Stratus 2 input for ADS-B in ...

(Not I think it should, or I bet it will ... But a definite "It will.")

As my previous answer, here is what ForeFlight support sent me several weeks ago before the release of 7.3 :

Hi Houman,

Gary here - thanks for your email.

Here's some follow-up information regarding the FlightStream and Stratus working together (FFM=ForeFlight Mobile):

The FS210 uses BlueTooth and the Stratus 2S uses wireless. Both may be connected at the same time. With 7.2, FFM with the FS210 supports using GDL88 for ADSB weather and traffic, pressure altitude, GPS position, and AHRS.

Since you do not have a GDL88, your configuration with a FS210 would not include the ADSB weather and traffic.

With 7.3 of FFM (available soon) , support for flightplan exchange is added. You can simultaneously obtain weather and traffic from your Stratus 2S via the wireless and the other functions from the Bluetooth/FS210. When you upgrades\ to a GDL88, you will no longer need the Stratus 2S other than as a backup. Currently with 7.2, the ADSB weather and traffic needs to come from the GDL88 as a single source when there is a GDL88 available.

Take a look at that and let us know if you have any questions -- we're happy to help!

The 650 does NOT have an AHRS in it.  The Flight Stream 210 does have one.

Already installed on both of my Ipad's, works great, but have not flown since the upgrade !!!

Update,

The FlightStream 210 works with Foreflight as advertised. Still getting ADS-B IN displayed on Foreflight via the Stratus 2. Flew a couple three hour cross-country IFR flights last week ... and the sharing of flight plans between the panel GPS (GNS-430W) and Foreflight worked perfectly. The feature was invaluable when I received several ATC reroutes ... flying IMC, single-pilot, no auto-pilot.

But when I displayed the AHRS (FlightStream 210 AHRS is the source now) on Foreflight the attitude display was sideways mirroring the sideways position  of the unit itself mounted in the avionics area.

According to the shop, at least for Flightstream users with Garimin Pilot App, - the mounting orientation of the unit (other than towards direction or flight) does not matter. The AHRS can be calibrated or "zero pitch and bank" regardless of the orientation of the FlightStream unit.

Our unit would not calibrate (AHRS) and after some discussion with both Garmin and Foreflight, we remounted the unit in an upright position. After that AHRS immediately was successfully calibrated using the -settings (on the AHRS/display) - "zero pitch and bank" - "save" beginning with the AHRS displayed in Foreflight.

Afterward, Foreflight suggested to make sure the Stratus 2 is turned off and no other devise connected THEN attempt to calibrate the FS-210 AHRS. However, we had already remounted it upright ... so we don't know if that might have solved the issue?

So Foreflight users, I suggest you make sure your installers, fabricate a bracket, or do whatever is needed to mount the FS-210 unit, not only oriented correctly with the arrows (labeled on unit) indicating "Direction of Flight," but ALSO mount the unit as close as possible to level and upright.

I called the shop afterward I told them that I wanted to return it, because "it hasn't helped my landings at all!" ... and they actually got my weird off-beat sense of humor ...

Great update David, can you take a picture of your Flightstream installation and how it is mounted please. I will have mine installed in couple of weeks and would love to make sure it is installed properly right out of bat.

Thanks !
