1st time for me and the I pad to overheat, why does it occur when approaching the IAF into Roanoke, my Mini on the yoke overheated and my IPad Air on my knee did not, what would cause one to get hot and not the other the on on my knee is black and the one on the yoke is white?? What are some handy ways to prevent this....

Sunlight directly on it has a tendency to trip the heat sensor...

Newer iPads don't seem to be as sensitive.

I have not had one trip without the suns help....?

Challenge #2...

While hiding the iPad away from the sun, be careful not to shade it from GPS signals...

I found having a WAAS antenna (sky radar) to be helpful for the second challenge...

Keep in mind I have years of experience with iPad 1, not so much with a newer one...

Happened to my yoke mounted iPad mini once...at the start of an approach in IMC....now I have the eyeball air vent near my left knee directed at it....seems to work...problem not recurred...and the iPad always feels cool...

Agree!! This works for me too with a black iPad mini. Keep an air vent on it and problem goes away. Only required when the sun is directly on the iPad. Only happens rarely but when it does some air circulation fixes the problem.

Had it happen to me this weekend on iPad mini just outside of DC SFRA. Direct sun on it while on my knee and set to bright. Bad timing. Had a few minutes to cool it down under the air vent...it came back to life. Anybody with a white mini have the problem?

I have a white mini and have not had it overheat. Sits on the yoke.

My white mini (latest one) has done that a couple of times when it was in direct sun.  I will try the vent solution from now on!

I also will test the plastic shades that attach to plexi glass ($7 from sporty or spruce) to keep the sun away.  This just came to me reading the topic.  Has anyone tried that?

It works but can get to be a pain as you and the sun move!
