I used the AOPA Partnership program in late 2011 to locate a partner for an airplane.

We met, decided we had compatible skills, finances and aviation goals, and that we could probably cooperate.   Then we bought a plane together.  We have been flying it about 350 hours per year and the partnership is working well.

Finding a good partner is harder than locating a good aircraft.

Finding a partner is like finding a wife... I have seen great airplane partnerships and some that ended up in divorce. Your philosophy on airplane maintenance and your how you structure the partnership seem to play the biggest role. At one time I searched for one when I entertained buying a new plane but realized, like my wife always says, "you're impossible to live with" ;) Seriously, from partnerships I know, you better share a common set of values or have clear rules on how about you go about managing the plane. I knew of one partnership where one owner did not want to replace items until they broke, the other wanted to proactively fix things. One day I walked in on them in their hangar and I thought I was in the middle of a domestic dispute. Wasn't pretty. On the flip side, I have seen great partnerships where I thought they were twins when it came to finishing each other sentences :)

Just like marriage, you need a very well crafted pre-nuptial, anticipating all the events you hope won't happen. In writings, signed and filed. Then you can mutually modify it when necessary.

Christian, ça va être difficile.

There are probably not too many pilots around your place who have the same budget, wants to fly IFR, would feel comfortable with a small cabin, would agree not to have a door on the left etc.

I was looking at finding one near Ottawa last year and finally decided to settle with a bit less airplane for now. I will upgrade it at my pace (which is actually different than my wife, and you can ask me who wants to spend more .. this would be a surprise)

All you need is...

(1)) The house paid for...

(2) Kids out of college...

(3) The cars paid for...

(4) Retirement covered...

(5) Health care Covered

(6) And your health...

I would prefer a second job and less plane, over a second relationship. In some cases, like Scott from IA, seems to be doing well. Byron has a three way partnership.

To find what's available, advertise in as many places as you can find that is being read by the people you would consider partnering with... Reading the ads is part of the picture. Posting an ad takes additional effort. It's like selling something.

If it's a Mooney specific. .. Here and MAPA?

Some place specific to your preferred airport, posting at the FBOs may make sense...

What have you done so far?

Best regards,

Check Craigslist and Ebay.  I've seen several advertised over the past few months, but finding one in your area might be tough.  I've been in two partnerships.  The first was my CFI who offered half his plane and was a match made in heaven.  The other ended in a divorce after one year and was my fault for not checking into it further and the lack of EVERYTHING in writing.

I own my C model and the joy of ownership and 100% control is wonderful if the pocketbook can stand it.  I would only consider a partnership now on a twin or larger 6 seater in a "flying club" setup with 5 or 6 guys and keep my Mooney for my commuting.

Thank you all,

I might decide to buy less airplane. I have the chance to fly a friend 201 with new paint and garmin stack. I did that for the last 250 hours. So I am not in a hurry. I am not very flexible. Mooney really fit my needs. I see it as a Italian sport car. I don't feel like stepping in a cadilac and buy a Cirrus...

Hey Christian,  Good deal finding a friend to share a 201.  If you are ever looking for a $100, come on by KPTD (25-30 min south of you by air and 2:15 by car from Montreal) and I will show you around my rocket.
