Right now it has blue jeans and slippers on it.... Give me some ideas...

You didn't let us know if you were naughty or nice this year! It has a BIG factor in what we would recommend... ;) I'm on the naughty list since I upgraded my panel this Fall. Got anything that is wearing out? Like headsets, knee boards?

I'd have to say I'm on the nice list since I retired on 9/1 and have dinner ready when she comes home from work (school teacher, kindergarten).

Don't want to go off topic but I was thinking of going FULL ADS-B next year. Upgrade the 430W to 530W, ADSB in and out. with traffic, weather.. got a quote for all that including labor about 10K. (didn't tell her yet).

But in the mean time ads-b that would display on my Andriod might be a good item. I just got Oxygen and bought one oximizer to try so I might add an ozimizer kit ($85) for the passenger to the list.. Also a kit to refil the O2 bottle from my welding tank.

.

On yea... she will NOT fly in a small plane so we never go anywhere together. I got to admit, she is the one who talked me into buying a plane after my partner dropped out of the last one. BUt she really wants me to fly more now that I'm retired... go figure, must want the insurance money.

Bill, all you need for full ADS-B is a Trig TT31 transponder connected to the 430W. thats about 3500$ for the unit, 900$ for install. If yu have a KT-76A transponder, it is rack compatible. Stick it in, connect the one wire to the GPS, and done. The GDL-88 is expensive, but not needed. If you have a GDL-39 and an ipad, you got the weather and traffic on that as well. Then the Trig triggers the ADS-B out, so you get all the traffic.

I could go the Trig route but I might as well get a bigger display to show the traffic and weather. I want to move out the old ADF so I'll move my Garmin 327 transponder and backup NAV/COM to the old ADF slot and stretch the 430 to a 530 display.

One wire from the transponder to the 430 gives you weather and traffic ? Perhaps I'll get a second opinion on that upgrade ...

Thanks for the tips.

No. The Trig will serve as an ADS-B transmitter when connected to an approved position source (like a 430W). It isn't an ADS-B receiver, though there are plenty of those out there for < $1k. To receive traffic information, you need to be transmitting your own position.

Rob, you'll love the WAAS! Be sure to allow time to practice some GPS approaches with glideslope before your Instrument checkride. They are very nice, and the CDI does not get more sensitive through the whole approach like on an ILS.

I have to admit, I still struggle with all the acronyms and what they stand for. I'm sure there is a cheat sheet for them all and wish I had one. As it is now, I have to them all up one at a time. Repitition!!!

I vote for a Sporty SP400 handheld nav-com with accessories to make it a backup system (yoke mount, headset addapter, antenna, spare battery case etc). Also an Aqua Link View PLB. Also a small halogen fire extinguisher to mount within pilot reach. All have safety arguments that make them more platable.
