Speed Merchant Posted September 15 Report Posted September 15 Hi My plane goes in for a new interior in November. The guy that is going to do the interior doesn't have a carpet surging machine. I think we will probably buy a carpet kit that the cutting and surging is all complete. How makes the best carpet kit for a 1984 201? Quote

How makes the best carpet kit for a 1984 201? Wool is the nicest. 1. Aero Comfort's wool carpet is a tad over $2000. (aerocomfort.com) You'd have to call Hector for an exact quote. 2. Once you add the Ensolite foam backing the SCS wool option is in the same ball park. https://scs-interiors.com/collections/mooney-m20/products/mooney-m20j-pre-cut-carpet-kit 1 Quote
Marc_B Posted September 15 Report Posted September 15 I had Aero Comfort do my interior and previously got samples from SCS. It was called something different but the wool carpet looked identical from the SCS sample. Wouldn’t be surprised if sourced from same company. +1 on the wool. It looks way nicer and professional. anthonydesmet Posted September 15 Report Posted September 15 I used Hector at AEROCOMFORT and he is always my “ go to” guy who I call first.he did all my trim, mouse boots, glareshield, windless, etc. However sometimes he gets backed up. Another option is AIRTEX interiors. They sent me my carpet set (floors & door panels) when I did my interior in 2020. Hector will do all the custom logos, etc. AIRTEX does not. http://www.airtexinteriors.com Quote

However, SCS has a lightweight option (not wool) that is significantly lighter (like x5-x6 lighter) than wool: 0.1x lbs/sqft vs 0.6x lbs/sqft. And that got me thinking... If there are (wild guessing) 10+ sqft of carpet that would be 5+ lbs less useful load with wool. Quote
Igor_U Posted September 16 Report Posted September 16 AIRTEX interiors are not the best, however the price was good and samples I received were nice enough so i ordered carpet kit 5-6 years ago. It's still looking good and I'm pleased with it. One thing to point out is that is (probably) 10lb lighter then the old wool carpet I had for years. I always wondered if the old one was really so heavy or just collected all the dirt and sand in it. 2 Quote
Pinecone Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Another option is to check for nearby aircraft interior shops. There are a number of them around. They would do a custom carpet for you, probably in the same range or cheaper than SCS. Quote
MikeOH Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Why would I not just go to an AUTOMOBILE upholstery shop? I'm sure they can get/use the proper fire-proof materials (not withstanding the fact that you can just placard a CAR 3 interior with a 'no smoking' sign) Quote

IIRC, surging the edges is what increased the price substantially and tipped the scale. This was in Seattle so your mileage may vary. 1 Quote
LANCECASPER Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Keep in mind the original poster @Speed Merchant (Curt LoPresti) is looking for the "best carpet kit" for his 201. He already tried a local shop that couldn't do it to his satisfaction (no surging machine for the edges). He's not looking for auto carpeting. He hasn't skimped on anything so far in renewing this M20J 201. Not only is this his personal airplane, but I'm guessing it's a bit of a tribute to his father Roy LoPresti (father of the M20J 201). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_LoPresti 2 Quote
PT20J Posted September 18 Report Posted September 18 I've put Airtex carpets with matching side panels in two M20Js (a 1978 and a 1994) and they both fit well. The carpet comes with foam backing and is light weight. The side panels come glued to corrugated plastic board. It's not a premium carpet that I'd put in my house, but it looks fine (to me) for a vehicle (comparable to my autos). 2 Quote
