Joris Posted April 4 Report Posted April 4 Hi, The carpets in my M20J 205 Special Edition (ser. 24-3076) are worn. I've looked at a few companies that sell M20J kits, especially SCS. SCS were kind enough to send my drawings of their carpet kits but alas, none of them seem to match my interior. Is there anyone here that has experience with a M20J 205 SE interior or knows about existing carpet kits that would fit? Best, Joris Struyve Quote

Best, Joris Struyve They have people on the phone who are prepared to discuss any issues you may have. I find their website a bit arcane, but I did find the page devoted to the M20J -- but not the 205 specifically. That said, I would be surprised if there were huge differences to other M20Js. I suggest a telephone call to: +1.218.728.1614 The web page for the M20J is: https://scs-interiors.com/products/mooney-m20j-pre-cut-carpet-kit Quote

Jetrn Posted April 4 Report Posted April 4 I recently ordered a m20k-252 kit from scs, and found that the 252 kit does not fit my 252. They have been great to work with. They sent me the drawings for the j, 231, k and a drawing from a customer using a combination of j and K models. After reviewing the drawings and measuring panels in the plane Then submit your your order. For me I will need the spar carpet from the 231, the front floor, aft bulk head and front kick panels from the j and k drawings. The j drawing is the only drawing that has the surge finish around the rudder pedals. But I do need them to modify the floor carpet to jog outboard at 31.5 inches. The drawings show 30.5 inches which causes the seat track to be covered at the forward edge. I will be emailing them today for the update on needed carpets. when contacting them I would ask them to surge the lower edge of the cargo door cut out, none of the drawings have this piece surged finished. Here are some pictures for reference. Quote
Z W Posted April 4 Report Posted April 4 I recently got a kit from SCS. It was easy to order samples in advance to see what you're getting. I needed some pieces from their 231 kit and some from their 252 kit. I had some parts of my plane that did not match their drawings at all. Sent them measurements for those and they custom-made them, turned out great. Had to slightly trim some pieces, easy to do with a pair of scissors. They also made a piece for my hat rack, which was not carpeted on their drawings. I think it took about a month (which included Christmas and New Years) for the custom work order and they did a good job. I'd recommend the kit and the company. I had considered just ordering raw material and trying to cut and bind it myself, since none of the kits seemed to really fit my plane, but I'm glad I did not. Theirs is much nicer than I could have done. My only complaint is that next to the new carpet, the seats and the plastics now look a little worn out, where before I thought they looked pretty good... Jetrn Posted April 4 Report Posted April 4 Could someone show a picture where your fire extinguisher is mounted? I particularly don’t like it mounted behind my emergency extension as can see in my previous post it’s in the way for the rear passenger seats. Quote
C.J. Posted April 4 Report Posted April 4 @Joris Just got the carpet samples from SCS two days ago. Outstanding customer service. Far better-quality carpet than Airtex IMO - provided you choose wool. For a M20C they provided two patterns, so I'll need to measure tomorrow to see if either will work or if a custom kit will be necessary. @Z W How did you go about measuring for the fuel strainer cut-out (or did SCS cut it) and did you glue down all the carpet down or use velcro strips? I cut out for the fuel strainer. I just laid the piece over it and used a fresh utility blade knife to cut through like a pie, then around. Wasn't too bad. The directions say to fold the pie pieces under but they didn't sit flush and it wasn't working so I cut them out. Ideally I would put some binding or something around the circle, but I have not done that. They sent velcro strips with the kit. I have not installed them yet. So far, the carpet stays where it is supposed to and doesn't move, since it is such a nice tight fit. I am not currently planning to do anything to hold it down, which makes it easy to pull the carpet for cleaning, inspections, or modifications. If I have trouble my plan is to use some rubber cement to install the velcro strips it came with. I did glue down the pieces on the split rear seat backs. I used 3M spray carpet adhesive, followed the directions, very easy. I would not glue all the carpet down. We spent a lot of time stripping out old glue before installing the new carpet. Nasty mess. We spent a lot of time stripping out old glue before installing the new carpet. Nasty mess. When I read the online directions to fold the pie pieces under, it did seem an odd solution, so I'll cut those off too. I'd be concerned the edge of the circle would eventually fray. Maybe super-glue the edge to bind it, although the webbed carpet backing seems strong. I'll try it without velcro first and see how it goes. Thanks for the pirep. I hear you regarding the glue. Spent countless hours removing the old asphalt/tar-like glue off the floor. Acetone had no effect, but mineral spirits worked fairly well. Definitely nasty work. In the end I scotch-brite wheeled off the remainder. I didn't bother with nosewheel well - I'll just glue on top of the OEM glue. Quote
Joris Posted April 5 Author Report Posted April 5 Thanks all for the suggestions. So SCS is quite flexible, which is nice to hear. I will ask them what can be done if I send them the dimensions/photos of my interior. Because I live in Belgium, sending samples back and forth is not convenient. Quote

Pricey, but it works great to dissolve all types of glue without removing paint: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/peerco02-00234.php I guess it's what they use to remove deice boots from wings. I can confirm it removes carpet glue and door seal adhesive very well also. Pleasant citrus smell, no fumes like mineral spirits. Quote
Pinecone Posted April 5 Report Posted April 5 Another option is to have a local shop make them for you. I have a good shop nearby doing my interior Quote

I wish I'd had that info 2 months ago but hey, no problem, the glue removal process is finished. As far as fumes are concerned, I wore a respirator and goggles. Without them my throat & eyes get extremely irritated accompanied with a headache. Even just a whiff of orange or yellow degreaser makes me nauseous Solvents & I just don't get along - brake cleaner being the worst. I find it amazing the mechanics in the shop breath those fumes on a daily basis totally unconcerned with their likely long-term health issues. Quote

They do excellent custom work, but their quote was just too high and at least for me, SCS provides very good quality for price. The local shop is actually reupholstering the seats. They had some leftover leather in the color I wanted from a Citation job, along with a gap in their schedule to accommodate my project so despite the substantial $$$ I felt it was totally worth it. 1 Quote
Pinecone Posted April 5 Report Posted April 5 You do have to shop around. And a smaller local shop may have negotiable price. Quote

If I were in Europe, I would ask them for detailed drawings with dimensions so I could make some templates to try in the airplane before finalizing an order. Quote
