I agree, especially since they can land in a parking lot and don’t need a 2000+’ runway. NORDO, slow, and landing against traffic…what could go wrong?!

I spoke with our airport manager about these guys. If you take Federal $$$…you cannot prohibit them from using the airport.

As much as i don’t want to share the runway with them, the fact is we need as many airport users and pilots as we can get. These folks can be educated just like the rest of the pilot community about safe operational practices. The pilot community working together with the airport manager can also work to set up a modified pattern at lower altitude to keep them out of the way and in an expected pattern; if there are enough such operations to make that worthwhile.

We have a guy like that at our airport.  An older fellow.  Its not a powered parachute but an experimental wing only thing that seems to land in pretty much the same short distance and go just as slow.  He seems unaware of general traffic flow and I know he is operating without a radio.  I think the fellow in the powered parachute may also be operating without a radio.

Yeah several years ago, at least ten I think I stopped in at Zephyr Hills waiting for the Airspace to open up at Sun-N-Fun.

They sell those trikes there with Rotax engines. I couldn’t believe what they were asking for those things, when he told me the price what immediately came to mind was it was about what I had paid for the Maule I flew in on, with a Lycoming 540.

I’ve heard they are up to about 90K now?

It doesn't have to be a powered parachute.

Was getting ready to fly earlier today.  Watched several airplanes take off Runway 19, including the tandem jump plane, and at least two in the pattern.   A low wing (guess which brand) taxies to the Runway, does a runup and departs against traffic, down wind.

I'd also point out the landing aircraft does have right of way, and if @amillet could see him and point the camera, he was probably pretty visible to the aircraft on the runway, unless he suddenly turned onto final or climbed from behind trees.   I also worried about whether the two were playing chicken, but hard to tell any of that without knowing what the landing guy was doing before the clip

They were both landing traffic.

Then the landing aircraft at the lowest altitude has right of way.

And personally, I'm almost never at a lower altitude than powered parachutes and the like . . . .

I couldn't tell from the video if the plane was landing first, or rejected a takeoff because of the parachute.

@amillet could say for sure, but the high-wing taxied back (no taxiway at this airport) and then turned into the ramp/parking area. If it was an aborted takeoff, and he was going to takeoff again, he would taxi back all the way.  If he was giving way to the powered parachute, I think he would hang back at the runway end until things were clear.

That makes sense, although I suppose he could have been pulling off to the ramp to find the offending guy and do some face-punching .  Not that I'd advocate for that, but it would certainly come to mind if I was there.

Listening a little more closely, I think you can hear the parachute motor, so that suggests that if the plane was taking off you should be able to hear his/her motor as well, so you're probably right.

I first noticed the ultralight about a half mile out to the west heading for the airport. As he was approaching to land, I believe he was heading for the grass runway 9L, adjacent to the paved runway (where he eventually landed). I then noticed the single engine aircraft approaching for a landing from the opposite direction on 27L.

I flew to CVK several years ago, and after a two hour flight did a midfield look above pattern. There were like 20 paragliders, having a get together nobody on the radio after landing when I taxiing into the ramp, a young child was walking without parental supervision on the ramp, almost shut down from a standstill, and a parent finally came over and attended to the child Wowza stay frosty

So we’ll put.

I had the “they don’t belong here” attitude about skydiving operations- seemed to me there’s would be a safer spot to land a parachute at than an airport. Then someone pointed out to me- they are using the airport for a recreational aviation type hobby just like I was… what made me think my Cessna or Mooney had more right to be there than they…  They had a valid point.

that being said everyone using the airport should be expected to contribute to safe operations.

In the summer, spray planes are a much bigger threat.  Take a look at KOLU.  The spray planes operate from the SE corner of the tarmac.  Unless the winds are strong, they will regardless of wind direction, take off 32 and land 20.

Fortunately, most of them use the radio well, are smart and polite about other traffic, and I have never seen anything close to an incident, at KOLU, at least.

At any rate, keep this in mind any time you are in spray plane country and season.

Joe Henderson (RIP) used to spray out of KCHD. Before we had a tower, I started my takeoff roll on 04, I was a ways down the runway when Joe taxis onto the runway at the end of 22 and starts to take off. He never talks on the radio. I keyed the mic and said "Joe, you going to turn right?" he keyed the mic for the first time in history and said "Yep"
