It appears they were having landing gear issues and apparently the gear would not come down. Seen way too many of these lately. Please put eyeballs on your landing gear and make sure you have an AP that is knowledgeable about Mooney gear.

I had serious trouble locking the gear down on one occasion, and thought I might have to land the aircraft gear up.  Managed to get it down and locked, indeed flew home that way.

This is unfortunate but knowing it was coming looks like the prop was horizontal and engine shut down eliminating a prop strike.  Repairs are simpler and cheaper this way.

Not just wide, it is also 12,500 feet long. KVQQ Was a designated alternate landing site for the space shuttle. Cecil Field was also a Master Jet base for the Navy until it was closed.

Only do that if you are really, really proficient. The windmilling prop makes a lot of drag during the landing. If you shut the engine down, the drag is less and there is a tendency to overshoot, especially given that ground effect is even greater with no gear. We discussed the amount of work to repair Mooneys landed gear up with Don Maxwell at MooneyMax and he said that the damage is surprising little (especially if the flaps are left up) except for what he called the "heros" that shut the engine down and then land short of overshoot and really tear up the airplane. Just sayin'...

Here is an update. It was 1965 M20C I presume with a Johnson bar. The only way that gear would not come down is if something broke (control rod failure, J-bar weld crack, etc.) or the gear was jammed. J-bar failures are rare so I would really like to know what happened here. I have a 67C with J-bar in annual at the moment.

I was flying from Saint Augustine to Atlanta yesterday and heard the pilot talking to Jax approach. They got his mechanic in contact with the pilot but I guess it was to no avail.
