Johns weather window lasted about a week or so... the first attempt, I believe, resulted in a come back next year, to get the job done... his trips defined Mooney efficiency...

If doing a repeat, or a speedier 252 run...

  • Precision fuel level sensors would be extra good... (Cies)
  • extended range tanks are a natural for a super long distance Mooney...(Monroy)
  • A really good engine monitor in place of the usual analog devices... (JPI, EI, or Insight :))
  • GPS integrated with the fuel data... constantly letting you know fuel on board, and fuel required to destination....
  • cruising LOP in the FLs.... that's just an extra nice side benefit!
  • A handful of other things would be nice... Mountain High O2 bits and pieces...
  • ADSB in weather/wind at altitude info or XM...
  • satelite receiver to get MS in the FLs... and WeatherSpork...

Hmmm.

Weather is the big thing.  He averaged 262 knots ground speed, so about a 100 knot tailwind for the whole trip.

My 252/Encore has the Monroy tanks, and run LOP at 75% power, it would be very close.  So even a single 25 gallon tank would be nice.  And the more aft CG would help.

O2 would be no issue, as a built in system with the 115 cf tank and an O2D2 would be plenty of O2.

A Starlink would be nice.  And then you could stream the whole trip.  Might need to get them as a sponsor, as their $250 a month plan only works to 250 knot GS.  And the next step up is a $2000 plan, but not sure if it will work with a mini antenna.

Oh, would also have to get registered to legally enter the FRZ in DC and work out being able to land at DCA.

Who was it that flew their M20-E from San Diego to Savannah non-stop a few years ago, without a ferry tank? I remember it took him 3 tries to get the right tail winds; his comments about ATC when he diverted from Albuquerque to his hometown in Kali were pretty funny!

Jonathan Paul? Maybe it was almost ten years ago now, time goes by faster every year . . . .
