I agree the end product is not as revolutionary as they promoted, but it's still an nice evolution of the product and someone looking to upgrade an ancient panel will benefit from it. Like it or not, avionics is now in the world of high-technology, where progress is incremental but constant. As to killing support for the 430/430W, don't believe that for a second. There are so many of those units sold that support will continue for a very long time. I have a 480 and have no fear about continued support for that device.

It is an interesting improvement. Not enough I suspect for many G430/530 folk to do an upgrade. But, if buying new, very nice indeed. And yes, our legacy G430/530's will be supported for the foreseeable future.

On the flip side for folks like me still flying around with KX155s and KLN88 door-stops (er, I mean LORANs) this is a pretty compelling product. The price does induce a big 'gulp', but there you have it.

An added bonus for me (personally) is that I just learned one of the guys in my (rather small) graduating class in college (computer engineering) has been working as an engineer on the new GTNs.

The partners of our '83 J have decided to move forward on the new system. We're now dealing with our shop to get a final price on a large screen 750.

My only trepidation at this point is if we buy now we may miss out on incentives later. According to my guy, nothing is being offered now because Garmin feels that there will be a lot of initial demand.

Keep us updated on how that goes. Interesting to see the total price if you need the Garmin 340 and 330 transponder unless you already have those in the plane.  I've seen some initial package deals for the 750 in the 28-30 amu range installed and that includes the additional boxes.  I have a feeling your right about the initial demand.  I've seen a few guys on other forums already lining up to get the latest and greatest installed.

So was the decision unanimous or majority rules... Tongue out

It appears we have a deal with our shop and I'm just waiting for a call as to when the unit will arrive from the manufacturer. We opted for the large screen 750 unit since this will probably be the last major upgrade the plane will ever have under our ownership.

All told the AMU will be < 18 due to trade in allowances for equipment that will be ripped out. The install also includes GPS Roll Steering for the KAP 150. I was hoping the unit would have this as a built in feature just as the G1000 does.

Garmin has already put out a series of videos on YouTube of the units. BTW, the in-flight videos are of the unit installed in the Garmin company Ovation.

Has anyone seen any movement yet on the 430/530 price for WAAS upgrade?

With the advent of the new touch panel Garmin, does anyone foresee a cessation of legacy support for both upgrade and new installs of 430/530?

Thanks in advance!!!

Let's face it, the GTN we are getting is replacing an ancient 155XL, and Garmin still issues updates for that one.

I don't think 4/530 owners have anything to be concerned about. I'd worry more about 100LL than Garmin support.

If Garmin were to kill support for the 430/530, would it be possible for a aftermarket company to step in and continue support?

I saw data saying Garmin had sold some 110,000 430/530 units so far, which leads me to believe they'd really be crazy to discountinue service on it.  Proprietary software/hardware issues might make it difficult for another company to pick up the slack if they did.

Just curious but is there many problems with the 430/530 units that would deter someone wanting to buy used or even purchase new?

Close.  The radio in the SL30 and GNS480 is a higher quality radio, of course the 480 hasn't been in production for awhile and there aren't nearly as many available units.
