I'm about to install a Garmin GTX345 to give me traffic.  I've got a G430W and mounted in the panel a Garmin 696.  The two are linked.  On the 430 I display nav data and on the 696 both nav and XM weather.  I'm thinking the proper place to display traffic is on the 430 so it doesn't clutter the weather display on the 696 but does anyone have experience and advice?

Thanks.

It seems to be most useable to have your NAV data and your traffic data in the same place...

1) it helps recognize the origin of traffic coming out of airports...

2) it helps to see traffic on the screen you always have in your scan.

3) most of my flights don't take a lot of looking at weather in flight anymore.

4) I have traffic on my iPad with WingX.  Being on the knee is not ideal for continuous scanning.  It gets a solid scan prior to entering the traffic pattern.

Pp ideas only.

Best regards,

I have a 696. I don't think it can display ADS-B weather or traffic even though it is synced with the GTN750 for nav.. (It can do XM.) I think the 797 might be capable of displaying ADS-B info but I'm not sure. I'm told the FS510 that I should get next week will able to use connext between the GTN and my tablet running Garmin Pilot wifi/bluetooth but not the 696.)

Robert, in the same panel space, I'd seriously consider the L-3 NGT-9000+

Mode-S ES, ADS-B in and out, Active Traffic TAS/TCAS (depending on which antenna you purchase).

Hands-down the most capable and best value going today.  About 40 hours on mine now, and wouldn't trade it for anything.  Your TAS/TCAS feature will be the best option for picking up traffic by far over TIS traffic alone with your 345.

It's capable, the Lynx box, but not sure about "best value".... they do cost about 5 AMU's.. there are far cheaper options out there for TIS B.  You do lose the TCAS piece, but if the 2020 mandate continues, that will become an increasingly less useful system compared to TIS B.

Do you use a tablet too?

We have a GTX345.  I use Garmin Pilot on my phone and tablet.  I display traffic on our GTN650.  On the tablet I use a split screen with a moving map on one half and traffic on the other half.  If I want to check TAF's or METAR's I switch the traffic page to widgets and take a look.  When I'm done I go back to traffic.  I display Radar and Airmets/Sigmets on the moving map.  I use the phone for approach plates using my hi-tech, 2 rubber band mount to the yoke.

Good points, but cheaper isn't always better.  As long as TCAS continues to pick up anything with a working transponder, and as long as TIS-B has gaps in coverage/service areas, TAS/TCAS will continue to be superior.  Remember, TIS stands for Traffic Information Services...subject to lapses in coverage.  Limitations that TCAS doesn't have.  There's a reason why it's an airline/corporate standard...
