I bit the bullet and bought Ryoder's M20C last week. He'll still be flying it, but I have a house with a hangar on a strip, so it made more sense for me to own the plane. 

 

This morning I did my first solo in a complex, first solo in my new (to me) mooney, and first solo from my house.

 

I really love this plane!

 

Special shout out to Ryan, who, through his own quest to become an aviator inspired me to achieve my dream!

Ryoder finally replied to an old PM on corvetteforum.  He told me he bought a new vette and sold his plane to a buddy.

Yeah, a corvette. LOL

He's welcome to fly 79396 whenever he likes, but I suspect he will end up buying another plane eventually - there's still room in my hangar after all.

congrats to the OP.  Ryoder did quite a few things to the plane when he owned it.  Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy it.

Yes he did. It's a pretty sweet ride. Only negative of the plane at all is the TSMOH, but it's still running good.

 

I had a little trouble learning how to put the gear down and locked. I was trying to muscle it into the lock with a bad angle from the shoulder and I nearly ripped my measly muscles off the bones trying so hard. Once I figured out how to get the angle right I've had zero problems getting it locked in.

Yes he did. It's a pretty sweet ride. Only negative of the plane at all is the TSMOH, but it's still running good.

Mastering the J bar comes with time and exercise.

it helps to pull the gear before you get too much speed going.  If I miss my window of opportunity, sometimes I nose over gently to make it easier to stow.

As far as TSMOH, I'd check the oil analysis and compressions and fly that sucker until it gives you reason to overhaul it.

It's not getting the bar to swing that I had problems with, it was getting the handle to go up into the lock.

Congrats!  I remember these events for me like it was yesterday.  Except the house one - which definitely makes your life cooler than mine.

Or try going inverted and let gravity help you. :-)

Congrats to the OP on buying the best plane ever.  I had tons of problems learning the J-bar, but even so I'd want nothing else.  Damn thing only gives me about 30 knots of airspeed.

not in a while.  Had a couple of C5s and a C6.  Flying really took my enthusiasm away from driving.

It's an airport community. I own a private hangar on my property, right beside my house, but the strip is public.

Thanks Greg.  I remember when I bought the Mooney and you looked at me like I was crazy but it rekindled an interest in you.  You have a beautiful plane and a beautiful home.  Enjoy it.

Congratulations!  Enjoy flying and just hit the numbers in the pattern - every landing is a go around.
