Toronto - CYTZ for a date night with my daughter.  It was a great evening for a flight over from Erie and back on Wednesday evening.  The underground walkway makes getting over to the city very easy.

A pilot friend of mine and I jumped into the Acclaim this morning and flew to two remote Colorado airports that neither one of us had ever visited: La Junta and Las Animas. Once we arrived it was apparent that we haven't been missing much, but the flight and the landings were fun!

Turbulence? Convective avoidance?

I guess technically a mother-in-law visit has turbulence and avoidance associated with it. As for the weather, there was this one patch of storms that required me to deviate a little, Otherwise, a pretty routine IFR flight.

I had a nice little jaunt down to Mobile this morning. It was a very comfortable 72° at 6500 msl, and hotter'n Hades on the ramp. Left to come home right at noon, she was showing 115° out on the tarmac . . . Climb was kinda slow up to 7500, where it was a balmy 68° and the four of us enjoyed my once-again-functional air conditioning. It failed again coming down between the clouds and into the haze layer around 3000 msl, though.

Can't complain, smooth flight both ways and only a little nose heavy. Wish I'd thought to take a selfie with all of us in it, we had to look like a clown car after the big guy got out of the right seat followed by a six-footer from the back and his little short wife, then me. The haze down there was pretty bad (it was very hazy the whole way down) but coming back it cleared up above the clouds and we actually had a horizon.

Returned after quick weekend UP North (Kel's family re-Union Saturday) Friday PM Up and just back.  Nice to be able to get up to 8500 VFR for a 2-hour flight.  Saw ground speed of 142-146 knots burning 9.5 at 10 LOP.  Super smooth.  Kel's mom is one of 7 kids.  The annual re-Union on a lake is a wonderful day.  Grandchildren are now able to tube and frolick next to the dock at one of her uncles.  Weather was sunny and NOT oppressive (Mid 70's) which makes for perfect on the sidelines and O.K. For kids that LOVE THE WATER :)  I love our Mooney.  Saved 11 hours of driving...Really trip wouldn't have been done without Mooney as  Kel needed to be back this afternoon and driving would not have allowed any relaxation.  Instead: A wonderful weekend with family enjoyed....

Long XC Solo, CNO-CMA-SBA-CNO, it was an adventure as is only appropriate. I'll write it up most likely tomorrow for those of you that are following my training blog. For now here are some pics.

Rose Bowl, it makes for a very fine VFR checkpoint.

Over the weekend.  A friend was out on a boat in Beverly harbor and my straight out departure had me heading towards them and then a left turn up the coast.  He got this picture as I went by but said it was quite difficult with the bright sun on the water and it was apparently quite choppy with the boat bouncing around quite a bit.

Well today was a WLW for breakfast and some shopping before the temps get too much. Nice little trip but very hazy from the smoking fire burning just south of home. We have had more fires in Lake county the past two years than the previous 19 years I have lived here combined.  I am getting really sick of it definitely not normal.  At least the TFR is clear of 1o2

Played hookie from work Friday and took my son and his friend and dad from Richmond down to Okracoke NC for a day at the beach.  First flight in small airplane for my sons friend and dad.  The dad was super impressed, the kids not so much.....damn video games I guess.  In any case only 1.2 hours both ways and got used out of RIC heat just a bit.

Well, 100 hours of work on the Lancair in the last 9 days (and went to work every day too), so thought I better take my wife on a little trip before she found someone else to pay attention to her.  Took her to Mackinaw Island for the day and she was all smiles when we landed.  Should be good for another hard session on the project now.

Tom,

That is a bucket list item.  Coming from the East what would be the best way to minimize "over water travel"?  How much time over the lake?  Haven't done any research, but Always wanted to take my wife there.  We vacation often in Northern Wisconsin (very close to UP).

I thought you were west of there?  Coming from the east would be coming in from over Canada, but any direction, from the east, south or west, you can hug the lake shore and avoid over water flight for almost every part of the trip other than the actual approach to the island.  The island is no more than a few miles off the shore of the U.P. and about 4 miles off the shore of the lower peninsula.  The airport requests you keep your pattern over the water, but you should always be within gliding distance of the airport if you plan it right.  Don't know if everyone knows it but there are no motorized vehicles allowed on the island (other than fire truck and ambulance <and airplanes landing on the runway>).  The airport is a 2 mile walk from downtown, or a taxi ride with a horse and carriage.  My wife and I walk 3 miles 4-5 days a week, so did everything by foot (about 6 miles yesterday).  Most use the taxi.  It's every bit worth the trip if you've never been there.

I understand that they have garbage trucks too, but they don't let them get seen during daylight. I also have some doubts that they built all their structures hauling materials in on horse drawn wagons.
