Like probably everyone on the forum, I keep an eye on asking prices and availability of Mooneys. I have an E model but have a feeling that one of these days I will move into a J. Prices seem to be down a lot but still very few sell. Some are on the market for years not just months. I know radios play a big part in the pricing but putting radios aside what are these things really worth, at what $ do they actually change hands? I don't need a glass panel just descent radios of which almost any Mooney will have. There was an '81 201 on this forum for sale earlier this year for about 60k. It looked like a nice plane. He lowered the price to 55k then 50k and finally 45k obo before it finally sold and probably for less. To me, this is a good representation of what this particular plane was worth when the time comes to sell and this plane was pretty typical of what I see not selling and priced in the 60k to 80k range. What do you folks think? Anybody have any first hand experience?

From a sellers corner, one would be well served if they honestly answer the question to themselves "What would I honestly pay for my plane today if I were buying it." It took me less than a day to sell mine this way.

So Nels, HONESTLY answer the question about your E model. Now figure a J Model with identical equipment, hours etc would be about 15-20K more. Add more for things like Autopilots, later tech GPS's, better paint and interior, better maintenance history.

That's probably the price you need to wrap your mind around, not what you can bottom fish for.

When was that? Sale reported in April of last year. Reregistered 06-09-2014.

Saga was end of 2013 to Jan 2014.

I often wonder if that plane was brought back from the brink with large amounts of TLC and $$, or if it was bought by some unsuspecting buyer looking for a bargain.

After reading a few paragraphs of this case I was compelled to read the entire document and was horrified by its contents. Forging a signature is one thing, but these guys flagrantly forged many inspections that weren't even performed in the first place.

I just conducted a search on Joel Stout and read that he got 5 years of probation and a whopping 60 hours of community service. Jay Stout, the owner of the firm, got 5 years in the big house and has to pay $500k in restitution to the aircraft owners.

Mike,  that is about what I'm thinking and that is probably about right. However, if you take a sampling of asking prices for E models and J models and add 15k to 20k to the E models asking price the E models don't equate to the average asking price of the J's. Maybe that method works using the actual selling prices.

Unlikely this extrapolation works. First there is the J to E base price difference, then mechanical condition/corrosion/interior, AFTT, SMOH etc. Then comes avionics and add-ons. Even within the J models, there is a difference between the '77, '78 and later 80's models. The variability could be easily 50k or more depending on all these factors.

Were I more mechanically gifted I might actually consider picking up an old derelict for a restoration project.  While one could get a comparable aircraft for less, one could not get one with the new paint I would put on the project, the new interior, or the rebuilt engine I would give it, nor would it have had the meticulous inspection and repair program I would give it.  It would also not have the suite of avionics that I desired and installed.  To me the appropriate comparison is not to a used aircraft, many (if not most) of which are old and tired.  My comparison is to a new aircraft.  New Mooneys are well over the half-million mark.  If I spent a quarter million restoring my old airplane to like-new standards I'd still count it a bargain.

I bought that plane in CA. No electrical issues and a working AP. LASAR annual was multiple 5 figures. We're still happy with the purchase and getting ready to update the panel.

i thought the price seemed a little low, she might be a good buy if low time engine is okay even with the years. But that's the rub, who knows. Need to have it checked over,

Price it as run out and hope for the best.  I would discount it less it if it was an 1100hr engine. 167hrs in 10 yrs is a much bigger crap shoot...

Thats how I feel about my Bravo. I know I am really flying a 700k plane for a fraction of the price. That is also why I don't mind spending what is necessary keeping her up even though it might seem expensive when viewed in a vacuum.

Get one with bad interior since that is a reasonably low cost DIY project. I would also get one with a run out engine because it will be priced accordingly and you can get an overhaul at a decent price if you shop. Get one with the avionics you want and resist the urge to update the panel. I might get a 201 some day and that is what I would be looking for.

So I have the same place as the ad with a 1.5 year old 100smoh with garmin 650 jpi 830 new glass and newer interior, 3500tt...original paint. So what's mine worth you think? I'm thinking about making the jump to a turbo bird.....
