Hi all,

I just moved to San Diego and looking to meet fellow Mooney pilot owners. Right now I am working on my instrument rating at KMYF and would be great to connect and share expenses flying Mooney aircraft. I am saving up for a late model 252, Bravo or first gen Ovation as my dream aircraft in few years.

Welcome to San Diego! I am betting you are a Plus One member their where you are working on your instrument rating? I instruct with them. I used to be based at MYF and moved to Gillespie a few years ago for the better hangar arrangements. I own a 252 kept in the Skyharbor hangars there. There are a number of San Diego Mooney owners that are also on MS here.

Cool yeah I am working on my instrument rating there. Had two lessons so far and plan to eventually buy a plane once I have the instrument rating. Since Mooneys fly high and fast, it is critical to have that IR ticket. I like the long body Mooney like Ovation and Bravos.

Why did you not get the Mooney first, then train for the IR in it?

There are a couple of Pros to go that way.

I did the IR in C172, then bought the O...

Would have been better to do it the other way around.

Many people get two rounds of Instrument training.  First to pass the test for the rating, often just VOR based. Then a second lengthy bout of learning how to survive real world GPS based instrument flying in their Mooney. In other words, how to use their new avionics.

To make long story short, I had to spend more time moving back to San Diego and work then to shop for a plane. Second, since I am buying a home this year, the funds must go to the home first and plane second. Long term, I do plan to get one. Hopefully prices drop on used Ovation or Bravo so a good one comes up.

Welcome to San Diego!  I have a M20E hangared at Speer Field on Gillespie.  I agree with previous advice to buy the Mooney then train with it, but like you said, it's funds dependent.  You're right that you should get your IR ticket if you're getting a Mooney but don't let that stop you; weather is so nice in San Diego you'll rarely HAVE to use it.  Especially if you learn to avoid the marine layer on winter evenings. 

Mine is out of annual as I have been out of town most of the last 2 years but when it's up and running I'll go flying any time I have an excuse to.

Thanks! Sure, hit me up when your M20E is back from annual and we can go fly for a hamburger run. I've been wanting to head to Catalina to check it out.

I've flown 201J and 252 Mooneys but like longer bodied models so eventually thats the one I am looking for as prices are pretty good now for a previous 400K aircraft.

I'm in Norcal but my youngest is at SDSU so I find myself in San Diego a lot. Catalina is a fun trip but is followed by a long, windy mountain bus ride if you want to see anything other than the airport.

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and live in San Diego and saw this post while trolling. I'm looking to buy my first airplane in the near future and have narrowed my search either a Grumman Tiger or Mooney M20F or J if I can fit in to one. I’m 6’5’’ and 250lbs... I have rented the Plus One’s Tiger out of KSEE and it is a fun airplane to fly. No problems fitting in the Tiger. Finding a Mooney ride is a different story though, as there are no F or J's available to rent in the area. Anyone willing or know someone who will share a flight sometime? I’d be grateful for the opportunity and would share the costs…

I'm a big boy myself and you'd fit better in the long body Mooneys like Ovation and Bravo. Those are my first choice for a Mooney even though more expensive than an older J or 231. Still for near turbo prop performance a used Mooney is way less expensive than a new Cirrus or used turbo prop.

Jon -- you will find Mooneys are built for taller pilots. Shorter pilots sometimes need rudder extensions.

At 6' 4" and weights that ranged from 210 to 290, I fit. Although I fit better when on the lower end of that range.

I'm based at KMYF and am there often your welcome to come sit in my long body to see how it feel. Im 6'4", 225lbs with a 35/36" inseam and fit better in a Mooney than other planes I've flown. I actually think my previous J had more leg room than my current S. I was wondering if my had rudder pedal extensions but I don't know what they look like. Regardless leg room is not an issue.

Welcome aboard!  I may be wrong, but I do not think there is a difference in cabin size between mid and long bodies, the only difference is in the baggage compartment. To add to that, I think there is little if any difference in size of the front seat area when comparing a short to a mid to a long body.  In fact, I find the high instrument panel on the long body to seem less spacious. Feels like a being inside a turret to me.

I am a new Mooney M20K 231 owner myself and am planning on using it for my IFR training. It is based at KSEE. Hangars are more available and cheaper!  

Does anyone know if the SD Mooney owners every get together to talk shop or fly together?

Where are you at KSEE? My 252 is at Skyharbor. Hangars are much better here too!

Jonhop, your are welcome to sit in my Mooney as well. I even have one seat with the rudder extension pedals and one without so you could tell the difference. That goes to Kirsten too if you want to verify whether or not you might have the rudder extensions.

I am located in the hangars off of Marshall. Not sure what those are hangars are called or if they have a name.  They are located right near the fuel island near the cafe.

Thanks Paul... when are you planning on going out to the field? I sat in this one--see the link--and am interested in it but stupid me didn't bring my headset and was too busy talking to the Salesman to get set up for flying to ensure I could get full control deflections without my knees interfering. I'm also very interested in Mooney A&P's at MYF or SEE to see if they can do a Pre-buy inspection on the below airplane...

CrownAir does my annuals and would recommend them for a PPI and whatever else you need. I also use an independent guy based out of KSEE thats good and use him for non specific Mooney items. He is capable of anything but certain things I like being entered in the log books as being preformed by a MSC which CrownAir is. He also lets you do owner assisted repairs/maintenance which I do when time is permitting. We did a top overhaul together on my last J together, trouble shoot my conditioning on my S, installed a Reiff pre-heater, GAMI injectors things like that. I have considered doing every other annual with him.

Who should I talk to at Crown Air? Does the guy at SEE let you help with repairs or does Crown Air? I am definitely interested in doing owner assisted repairs like the Gami injectors. And replacing the landing/taxi lights with LED versions.
