Yoke restoration -- Mooney Bird

Anybody know how to restore the plate on the older yokes?

 

Specifically, the "Mooney Bird" logo.

 

The plate appears to be aluminum and is riveted in place.

 

If I could get the original art, I would just have a high end decal made and paste it on there.

Not sure if this is viable, but A.C. Spruce sells the Mooney logo 4" by10".

 

Probably any decal shop could make the size reduction for you.

That is not quite the same bird. Turns out, there is a part number 130057-3 for PLACARD, Control Wheel. I think it is for the plate, which I really do not want to drill out and replace. I have an email into Mooney to determine what it is. If it is the decal, then I am good to go--assuming that they have any left after 50 years!

 

I asked if they had the artwork because like you said, easy to have a decal made in any size.

I think you should be able to get the vector artwork by googling. Or make it. And take it to a local trophy and plaque shop that has a laser etcher. They would have different plastic and metal stock to pick from. Then I would just shoe goo it in place.

HRM, you need an outfit that makes plaques and name tags and similar things. Find one that can custom make it in the size and shape you need. Try this outfit: www.plaquemaker.com

May not be a bad idea to remove the old one to send in if they need it.

Be ready to also provide them with a high def file of the logo. It's called an eps file and you should be able to get from Mooney.

They'll make ot and all you have to do is install it with adhesive.

Try "Wicks" I seem to remember the yoke decal in there. They also have them on EBay, but at 10x the price. It's a decal, but quality appears good.

If you can get the artwork you can have it silk screened. That is how it was done.

I have seen several of those on eBay. At least the cut out is the same shape...

I have two paper decals with the same Vintage Bird that's in your avatar, which is not what was on your original metal plate.

Well, I am hoping to get the original artwork from Mooney. We'll see. They have been helpful in the past.

 

I did find a photo of a horn in better shape than mine (graphic wise), so now I know exactly what it looked like.

 

 

I think I can reconstruct it now. I am considering just using a fine-point paint pen.

If it is of any help or interest to you, I have a yoke that was powder coated a few years ago that is in great condition with a good Mooney decal on it.  I removed both of my old yokes this winter as part of a panel upgrade, and would send the old ones to a good home for any reasonable offer.

My wife got one of these http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/  it cuts out from vinyl sheets.  Once we get it going,  There should be some fun graphics on the plane such as "Rescue"  And "Danger Jet Blast"
