So, I'm getting started on my panel make over. Below are original pictures and cheesy proposed photoshops of what I want to do.

Left Side-

Organize into 6 pack, Change Airspeed indicator to knots on outer ring, Add a CDI with Glidelope, Add a vacuum gauge, Move the ignition switch and master down to lower panel and raise the headset jacks up, move JPI 700 to far left, change gear indication lights to larger square type, Add NuLites where needed.

Right Side-

Add Garmin 696 with Airgizmo dock, rearrange other factory insturments to accomodate, move circuit breakers, Avioincs master and cigarette lighter to lower panel, Add NuLites where needed.

Install new proper fitting glare shield. Maybe change all switches to rocker style.

What do you think?

Dave,

Off to a good start.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer the outer ring on the AI to be in MPH and the inner ring to be KTS.  My rational was the Owners Manual has everything in MPH, so I wanted to keep that the primary. I'm also a fan of the toggle switches so maybe I'm just weird... Wink

My panel is somewhere between what you are looking to do.  I LIKE YOUR IDEAS  A LOT!  Where will ignition and Master go?  The 696 panel dock is a dream for my right side panel that will likely NOT happen for a number of years.  I look forward to seeing yours in and complete.  I like the look of my extended left panel (extending over push/pull and rocker swiches/yoke.  Have you considered this?  Could do same on right side.  Your center stack looks great as is...

Have fun.  I am so ingrained on MPH on outside of airspeed that would be a BIG CHANGE to swap knots to outside.

Nice plan. One comment, the EDM 700 may not fit where you want it due to insufficient depth. Measure that sucker first before you get a new panel cut.

(I wanted to put mine in a similar location in my E but could not).

Dave,

Are you considering using machined sheet metal in place of old style plastic overlays?

Best regards,

That's a lot of money to spend for pure aesthetics, in my opinion. But hey - it's your plane :) Good luck!

I have been wanting to do something similiar.  Remove the broken and cracked plastic panel and rearrange everything on a sheet of powdercoated aluminum.  Does anyone know what paperwork is required to do something like this.

Someone else may be able to comment more intelligently as I'm no avionics/electrical expert, but I believe the OEM toggles are breakers also.  It's my understanding that if you go with the newer style rocker switches you'll need to add breakers for those items so consider that in the cost and the space those breakers would consume.

Absolutely everything will be measured out and checked for placement before cutting. I chose this spot because I have seen other Mooneys with it there. If it won't go there, another option would be to go for an HSI and then put the 700 in the lower right spot where the #2 CDI is now. I really would rather not do this this though just because I want to try to keep costs down.

Dave,

I used a Cessna rocker for my master.  I believe this part (split rocker/red) was under 20 bucks @ Spruce.  I also like the look of the rocker for the master vs. the OEM toggle...Looking forward to seeing photos.  FYI my Avionics shop at CID stated following after doing panel in my logbook...(Performed minor alteration by removing L/H instrument panel and replacing with customer supplied panel.  Also isolated Avionics components from the main battery bus and created an avionics bus.  Supplied power thru a 25A Circuit Breaker Switch labeled "Avionics Master"...)

Have you considered the BK Av80r Ace as opposed to the 696.  Set up for weather, it is cheaper than the 696 and gives you sectional charts as well as ability to play multimedia files.  I am very happy with mine.

Added plus is less of a penalty on your useful load (you save a little over 1 lbSurprised)

Good ideas, Dave.  I like the rocker switches as well.  Also, it's good that you are putting the vacuum gauge beside the AI, as you can sort of view the vacuum gauge when scanning the AI.  Powder coat with silkscreen lettering is down-right gorgous...

I'm not sure on this myself, but I'm going to find out. I believe that the metal panel itself is considered a owner produced part and needs a 337 with field approval. Maybe I'm wrong, all I know is it's done all the time, so the professionals that are going to do the work will figure out the paper nonsense.
